Go right to the top of Mount Eden to look down the extinct volcanoe's crater. Admire how the steepness of the crater has become a comfortable shelter for the cows that roam Mount Eden. Plus it also offers a tremendous view of the obelisk of One Tree Hill. Try to catch a view of One Tree Hill from Mount Eden and a view of Mount Eden from One Tree Hill. Visit Eden Village at the foothills to experience the olde Englishvillage lifestyle that it offers.

Mount Eden is Auckland's largest mainland volcanic cone. The hill (it's nowhere near mountainous), is located quite centrally and it is a popular stop for coach tours, so the carpark at the top gets pretty crowded. If you feel like a bit of exercise, walk up to the summit. The Maori name for Mt Eden is Maungawhau and the views are excellent - rivalling those of the Skytower, which you can easily spot from the volcano. One is not supposed to climb down into the crater, but lots of people do. The experience of looking back up from the natural ampitheatre is quite peculiar.

As the highest volcano on the Auckland isthmus it provides good views over the city and the Waitemata Harbour.
