The Devonport Ferry is the cheapest way to get aboard a boat and see the Auckland Harbour. The 10 minute ride leaves from the bottom of Queen St and takes you to beautiful Devonport, a quaint town which still retains some of the charm of Aucklands early days. A short walk to either Mt Victoria or North Head will provide spectacular views of the city and the Hauraki Gulf. Nearby Cheltnam beach also offers the chance of safe family swimming at high tide.
Cost NZ$8 return.
