Herald Island Favorites
Favorite thing: Take a drive around the island, there is a sort of ring road, it is a small island.
You can see a variety of houses, ranging from small holiday houses, to more modern residential houses as this one. The trees here are called Nikau Palms and are known as the most southern growing of palms, capable of growing in the coldest temps for palms. They are very attractive, especially the 'bulb' that forms where the fronds emerge.
Favorite thing: From the causeway to Herald Island you can view the Greenhithe Upper Harbour Bridge, and the area to the right of that is Hobsonville.
This mass in the foreground of the photo, is a mangrove swamp. As a child we heard that these areas were smelly and dirty and mostly hated. Tidal waters come and go and during the 'out' period the mud tends to be a bit smelly. Now these mangrove swamps are likely to be protected as they are more and more being cleared.
