On the coastal road north of Orewa, as it winds up or down the hill, depending on the direction you're heading, there is an elevated viewing platform in a small parking place on the cliff side of the road about halfway up the hill.
From there you get a fine panorama of Orewa Beach and round to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. In this photo you get an idea of how far the tide goes out. The view changes with the weather and is worth a stop for a photo anytime.

The main attraction for visitors to Orewa is the beach. People from some parts of Auckland spend their Christmas- New Year holiday here (though there are nicer beaches further north). However, the beach is a lovely place to stroll, play beach cricket, or just wallow in the sea. Kite surfers love this place when the wind is the right strength and blowing from the right direction. They are fun to watch. There is a surf club and beach patrol in the summer months. They would advise you to swim between the flags, though you'd have to be a pretty unconfident swimmer to worry too much about swimming at this beach, as it is seldom very rough.
