    Waiheke Island Things to Do

Every Saturday morning 8.00am - 1.00pm, the Island holds a community market at the RSA in Ostend. Lots of gifts, arts and crafts, second-hand goods, and even entertainment, organic produce, books, plants, jewellery. This is a popular activity on a Saturday morning, showing typical flair of a lot of Islanders. Experience the character of Waiheke...

  • Fullers Waiheke Ferry

    Waiheke Island Transportation

Frequent ferries connect the island of Waiheke with downtown Auckland. I caught one of these ferries, operated by "Fullers", for a daytrip to the island during my visit to Auckland in March 2006. The following information is correct as at that time: Ferry times Ferries leave for Waiheke Island approximately hourly during the day from Auckland's...

  • Wreck Bay (Boulder Bay)

    Rangitoto Island Things to Do

This is one of the lesser known walks on Rangitoto and is more uneven than the summit tracks. Boots or good walking shoes are needed. Your shoes will most likely bear the scars of this walk. The start of the track is on the road to the summit from Islington Bay beyond the junction to Yankee Wharf and took us about an hour each way with children. The...

    Rangitoto Island Things to Do

If you have a half day on Rangitoto, you must do the summit climb. It takes anywhere from 35 minutes (me) to an hour or more (most people) to get from the ferry terminal to the top. Once there, you will find benches on which to rest and eat your snack or lunch, and from where to admire the 360 degree views all around.Fullers Ferries also operate a...

    Rangitoto Island Favorites

The summit of Rangitoto is a large plateau which has been boardwalked, with places to sit and relax after your climb. The view, of course, is superb, with views out to the Hauraki Gulf and beyond - from here you can see Great and Little Barrier Islands in the distance, nearer Waiheke island, Browns Island, Motutapu, and Auckland itself. All this I...

Unless you have your own boat or are ready to hire one, the only way to reach Tiritiri Matangi is by the Kawau Kat hydrofoil service that leaves Auckland for the island via Gulf Harbour daily in high season, or five times weely in low season.Fares are under 60 NZD RT, with discounts for students, backpackers, seniors and children. There is a small...

  • Spotting the locals.

Tiritiri Matangi Island Things to Do

One of the main reasons to visit Tiritiri Matangi is to see rare New Zealand wildlife. Our islands have no native mammals, apart from bats and dolphins. So, our birds have developed to fill all sorts of niches. In this picture, you can see a Hihi - or Stichbird. I had never seen one in real life before my trip to Tiri. I was also very lucky to see...

It is filthy, dated and the adults pools were closed. The changing rooms and toilets were unusable and there was no private space to change. It was completely unacceptable. If you love the spa experience, it is worth the drive to Rotorua. It is $26, and I wouldn't use it for free.
