Try to wear clothes that cover your legs especially when you are outdoor near grasses and greens to avoid getting stung by sandflies. I was there in March in the Rotorua area and was stung by these mosquito-like insects. At first i thought there were mosquitoes but a few days later, my legs had red bumps which were very itchy, unlike normal mosquito bites.
I know this one may seem obvious but better to put it here than not! I think it would be best to avoid walking through Albert Park and Victoria Park (both in the city) at night. There have been cases of women being raped in these parks. There are no problems that I know of during the day though.
