The food was really nice, and a wide selection to choose from. Breakfast menu still on at 2pm. It seems very popular for kiwis to eat from a breakfast menu during the afternoon.
What we found handy was that this café still had it's kitchen open, even on a Monday. A lot of eating houses close Mondays, or at least the kitchen closes, as they are open all weekend. Just makes it hard if you happen to be out and about on Mondays.
I ordered Oreo Dory and salad. This was really divine. Lovely tender and juicy panfriend fish, set on a bed of mixed lettuce salad with lovely parsnip shaves and even passionfruit sauce. REally tasty.
Their coffee was nice too, always leaves an impression with me anyway. A typical kiwi pavement cafe, the Cabana Cafe is on the seafront, overlooking the beach and the ocean. All day breakfasts a speciality, a good coffee menu, and a perfect spot to indulge in one of my favourite pasttimes, people watching!
One of the things I love about living in New Zealand is the way it has thoroughly embraced pavement cafe culture and made it its own!
If there are Eggs Benedict on the menu, and it is before 3pm, that is what I will order nine times out of ten (I am a creature of habit, I guess, and I love Eggs Benedict). Slight variants on my favourite are usually found, and the Cabana Cafes interpretation includes two scoops of mashed potato mixed with wholegrain mustard - which went down nicely I am pleased to report. Lunchtime under an emerging blue sky put me in the mood for a crisp white wine, but alas the Cabana is not licensed - never mind, the freshly squeezed orange juice almost made up for it and all for $15NZ.
