We are picked up from our hotel and taken to the lakeside for our flight. David gets to sit in the front, another couple in the middle and I sit in the far back.

It is quite bumpy when we take off across the lake, but as soon as we leave the water is becomes quite smooth.

Lake Rotorua lies in one of the largest craters of the Taupo volcanic area, and it is the second largest lake of NZ North Island.
A stroll on the lake promenade is a must when visiting Rotorua: a nice well-kept park borders the lake and you cannot help sitting on the grass or on one of the several benches bordering the promenade.
I felt a sort of attraction for this place, I still remember its magnetic effect and the time we spent there, just doing nothing and looking at Makoia Island standing in the middle of the lake.
A very romantic Maori legend is set on Makoia island: the legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai.
According to legend, the two lovers were forbidden to marry, and Hinemoa's father Umukaria, a chief from the shores of the lake, ordered that she not be allowed to travel by canoe to Tutanekai's tribal village on the island. Hinemoa decided to swim 3.2 kilometres across the lake to the island, guided by the sound of Tutanekai's flute-playing. For flotation she wrapped hue or gourds around her and swam her way to the island.

Lake Rotorua is a volcanic crater lake and is the second larest in the North Island after Lake Taupo.

The town of Rotorua is located on the southern shore.

Fishing is popular activity as are boating, kayaking and waterskiing. Relaxing on the shore is a popular non-activity. There is a paddle-boat which offers cruises.

Mokoia island in the background of Lake Rotorua

The only thing that we overlook while visiting Rotorua is its lake. Lake Rotorua is pretty with dark color water. It is a large volcanic lake. Mokoia island which lies at the center of the lake can be seen from the shore. And Rotorua itself lies on the shore of Lake Rotorua.

    Lake Rotorua

The city of Rotorua is built on the shores of this lake, which is the largest in the area. Cruises available, or just a nice place to take an evening stroll along the shore...

    Lake Rotorua

A 1 hour cruise on Lake Rotorua is a nice, relaxing and non-strenuous thing to do (and when I got out of the hospital, that's what I did).
