On our way from Taupo to Rotorua we followed the signs for Orakei Korako and we don’t regret this ‘detour’. It is situated about ½ hour from Taupo and ¾ hour from Rotorua.

The visit to this thermal reserve starts with a ferry trip across Lake Ohakuri. From the boat we already had a wonderful view to one of the silica terraces: the Emerald Terrace. There are a couple of terraces in this thermal area and they all have magnificent colours. We did like most the Rainbow and Cascade Terrace.

Orakei Korako has also a number of active geysers which spurts water and steam in the air. Not too high but still impressive to see. Another highlight is the Ruatapu Cave with a crystal clear hot water pool at the bottom.

It did take an hour to walk along all the thermal attractions like boiling mud pools, hot springs, gushing geysers and these wonderful coloured silica terraces. A very interesting and impressive area.

We adore this ‘Place of Adorning’ (that’s the translation of Orakei Korako)

Rising steam, bubbling water or mud, almost wherever you look. That's what it's like at many of the great Thermal attractions in and around Rotorua.
