Bubbling Mud Pool, Wai-O-Tapu

The Rotorua area is well known for its geothermal activity, and the best place to experience these natural wonders up close is at Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. The park encompasses a large area of impresive geothermal pools, rivers, geysers, and mud pools. Even before you enter the park you can see the steam rising from the earth and smell the sulphur in the air.

Once inside, you are free to explore unguided at your own pace. The most impressive site is the large champagne pool, with billows of hot steam and dizzying array of bright colors. There is also the Lady Knox Geyser which erupts daily at 10.15am. Just a short drive outside the park are the bubbling mud pools, which are also well worth a visit.

This a really cool national park, you get to walk among bubbling mud and sulphur rivers and waterfalls yellow with minerals. Some sections are very impressive.

This is the Devil's Bath in Waitapu.It certainly fits the name because it smells quite bad and only a devil could take it. It is especially stinky and smells quite something else altogether.

Tip: If you are bringing kids here to Waitapu, it's a good idea to keep them on a tight leash. The attractions here have very low fences and there is nothing to stop a naughty kid from falling down and becoming a fixture of the landscape.

But if you are thinking of bringing kids here, the question you have to ask is why...??? There are many more attractions at Rotorua which are interesting and kid-friendly than this.

This is the best Thermal pools I went to while in Rotorua. Loads of people go but its very large so its not to bad. If you have a choice between Hells Gate and WAI-O-TAPU, I would recommend WAI-O-TAPU.

Wai-O-Tapu means Sacred Water. This is New Zealand's most colourful natural volcanic environment. See the Champagne Pool, Artist's Palette, Lady Knox, Devil's Bath... Allow at least 2 hours to stroll & admire this magnificent park.

The trip won't be complete without the experiencing the eruption of Lady Knox Geyser @ 10:15am daily (guaruantee!! - you'll find out when you visit). Get there early to get yourself a good spot!! It's located off the main park (will be signposted).

Opens 8:30am - 5:00pm daily (last admission @ 3:45pm)

Waitapu is like the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua and NZ. There are many pools and lakes filled with all kinds of geothermal activities including mud pools, sulphur pools etc.

The whole area of course really stinks as you are looking at a concentration of lots of noxious gases here.

This is a picture of the Champagne Pool which looks like a riot of colours: orange, yellow, green and even brown. It was bubbling all the while (which probably means that it is very hot) and fogs up the air.

There's also a bridge you can walk on, if you like to get a closer look.
