 | Bay of Plenty Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 12 | | Popular Things To Do | Miscellaneous Things To Do Tips | All Tips (12) A short drive will take you to Maketu, a famous maori landmark (It is the place where the Te Arawa canoe is said to have landed) and my favourite beach "Nudicks", access is via private land so there is a toll to enter and use the dirt track that takes you down to the beach. Its good for bodysurfing and gathering shellfish which include, pipi's (clams), mussels and paua (abalone) along with kina (sea urchins) which are a favourite of the locals and crayfish. You can walk around a headland over rocks back to the township of Maketu. In Maketu itself the Fish and Chip Shop offers a superb selection of fresh local seafood or if you're not a fishy person try one of the pies made by the "Maketu Pie" shop. These have become so popular that you can now buy them frozen in Supermarkets in Auckland. Leave a Comment

My favourite town in the B.O.P. It's claim to fame is that it's the Kiwifruit Capital of the world. But it is also my fathers home town and the place I spent a lot of holidays with relatives. If you have a WHV you could very well end up here picking kiwifruit, it is one of the easiest fruits to harvest as it is picked firm and is difficult to damage or bruise. Te Puke also produces large crops of advacadoes, citrus and stone fruits; there used to be an ad on New Zealand TV that went "Nobody knows where the Schwepps lemon tress grow"....well I knew; Te Puke. Te Puke is on SH 2 between Tauranga and Rotorua and within easy access to Mt Maunganui, Papamoa, Pukahina, Whakatane and Matata. Leave a Comment

Kiwifruit Country offers visitors the chance to look at the workings of a kiwifruit orchard and export packhouse. Plus you get to ride in a kiwi-kart, a kiwifruit shaped carriage that is towed through the orchard. Just look for the big kiwifruit on SH2 south of Te Puke. Leave a Comment

Maketu is the landing side of one of the canoes bringing New Zealands first inhabitants. There's a Maori pa site overlooking the water of Town Point, near Maketu. Maketu has a great beach too.

Ohope Beach is 7 km from Whakatane. It's a great beach for a swim, a walk or a day of sunbathing.

Tauranga is the main city of the Bay of Plenty. Tauranga is Maori for The Resting Place of the Canoes. Actually, Tauranga is one of the main ports of New Zealand. There's not much to do in the city, but the beaches around are great.

Te Puke Vintage Autobarn is worth a look if you like vintage and classic vehicles. Over 90 vehicles are on site and you can wander freely amoung them. The Autobarn is run by the Ray Singleton, a local. In a case of "its a small world', his son Daniel was backpacking in OZ and worked with my Dad picking mangoes in Far North Queensland. Situated on SH2 just South of Te Puke look for the Kiwifruit Country's giant kiwifruit. Leave a Comment
