See travelogue for more about our interesting adventure trip to White Island with Pee Jay's Adventures, on the Pee Jay V (holds about 60 passengers, and they also have 1 smaller boat)
The guides on board and on the island are informative without being too technical. They really looked after me when I was seasick both ways.

We went on a tour to White Island about 2 weeks ago, it was amazing trip. Its New Zealand’s only live marine volcano. The trip does take most of the day (about 5-7 hours). I took over 300 photos of White Island, and if you are here in NZ then White Island should be on your list.

White Island is New Zealand's most active volcano about 50 km's off the coast of Whakatane.
The best way to visit this incredible spectacular spot is to take a guided boat tour with White Island Tours.

Go over the hill to a great beach at Ohope. You can surf there, but it is also great swimming. Over the summer it is really popular with campers.

White Island lies 49 kilometres off the coast of the Bay of Plenty. This active marine is full of hissing fumaroles, bubbling mud, steam and gasses spewing into the air.... we had to see it!

Whakatane - starting point for White Island

Whakatane is a small town in the Bay of Plenty. It has some nice shops and restaurants in the main street. But by far the most important of the town is the possibility of taking a guided boat tour...

Not many tourists head out this way but its a shame, Whakatane is a lovely little town with a small fishing harbour. Nearby, just 50km off shore is White Island, an active volcano, which you can get...

An enjoyable Bay of Plenty Town

Whakatane has certainly grown since I lived here in the (I will not tell you which decade, far too revealing) but still has that homly feeling. Its a pleasant town to visit, certainly there are things...

Whakatane - portal to White Island Volcano

My lasting memory of Whakatane is the speed of the outgoing tide (video) through the entrance of the harbour. Being an old and once bold sailor-upon-the-sea, I can not help take more than a passing...
