The Royal Oak at Tapu: Just for Jen...

by allikat

The small settlement of Tapu is located on the main coast road between Thames and Coromandel Township. From Tapu, you can either continue along the coast road to Coromandel, or take the long winding unsealed road over the hills to Coroglen. The Royal Oak stands at the corner of the Coroglen road. To be honest, there isn't too much else at Tapu, a couple of general stores and a camp site. Its a good stopping point for a bite to eat, a cold beer or a coffee. The bar area itself is typical of a lot of New Zealand pubs, that is to say, not particularly cosy or attractive. But there is a decent beer garden, with barbeque area, and the people are pretty weloming and relaxed. As casual as you like, they don't stand on ceremony here!

The Star and Garter: Great bar with an old colonial feel

by allikat

The Star and Garter bar is whats left of the original Star and Garter hotel which burned down on Christmas Eve in 1895, destroying several other buildings in the process. The bar has been recently restored, and they have done a great job, with an old colonial feel, lots of wood, and a 'Telegraph Room' offering broadband internet access.I saw a beautiful old black and white photograph on the wall. A young girl, maybe 15 or so, hauling bundles of rope down at the wharf. I sat there with my glass of wine and thought that, in all honestly, we modern women have very little to complain about... Casual, but the bar has a smarter feel to it than your average kiwi pub.

The Pepper Tree restaurant and bar: An 86 year old pepper tree!!!

by allikat

The Pepper Tree takes its name from a huge pepper tree which, according to one of the bar tenders, is getting on for 90 years old! It's a pretty impressive tree, and its huge leafy branches overhang the outdoor seating area. Its a great bar, with seating indoors and out and often live music during the afternoon. They also have a large outdoor screen, and you will find plenty of locals here when ther is a big rugby match on, cheering the All Blacks! A good atmosphere and great surroundings, right in the heart of Coromandel Township. Pretty casual. Most pubs and bars in New Zealand are casual dress. The Kiwis specialise in chilling out and being casual.
