Money money money!

by allikat

Pauanui is on the East Coast of the Coromandel, and is heavily geared towards watersports and beach activities. It is an attractive area, well looked after, with a good beach and excellent facilities. A large percentage of the population is temporary, with many people (mainly Aucklanders) having holiday homes here. Property here is expensive - and it shows! In more recent years, the modern 'Waterways' development has given rise to Pauanui's 'playground for the rich' reputation. Here you won't find your 'average' kiwi (not just my opinion, but also that of several kiwi friends). But you will see some very big houses, and lots of very big shiny boats! It really ought to be done. Accquire a motorised dinghy, and tour the Waterways, taking care to dodge the jetski's, and admire the houses, the boats, and the inhabitants on show!

More expensive.

Well, not a trap but it helps knowing. Things on the Coromandel region can be a few cents more expensive, than other areas of the country. Seems the more remote location is the cause of this, and no doubt the common occurance of tourists, who are willing to pay. I don't mean to fight this, as I appreciate the facilities that are available to us over there. so for example, personally i try to support the supermarket at Whangamata, and the stores around Coromandel. For convenience I would rather pay a bit more than not have them there at all. Some people load up and take lots with them. Food and supplies that is. I prefer to take just a little and support the business on the Coromandel, therefore pay the higher prices.
