Bakery

This place makes lovely everyday bakery items, just what you need when away from home and hungry. It is something of an institution here at Whangamata. Has relocated, used to be down closer to the wharf, but is in the centre of town now, and closer to where i stay!

What to buy: Not at all good for the waistline, but I like the cream donuts and apricot turnovers. yummmm!!

What to pay: Not an expensive way to feed yourself, and very filling. Go back on the diet when you get home.

Sunny's of Whangamata

This store has almost everything you may find you need when away from home. A lot is relatively cheaply priced, that you may just want to 'make-do' and not wanting to buy the best of something. It's a great place for kids too, to spend their pocket money and be happy with what they buy. Perhaps a kite or bubble maker, or toys.
A great place to pick up something for a rainy day at the beach, jigsaw, cards and such.

What to buy: Bedding, hardware, kitchenware, music, toys, fishing gear, heating, electrical goods, just everything!
And all pretty well priced.

Also camping gear, gas stoves etc. A good supply of parts and accessories for backpackers too.

Icecream van

During the summer months, when the population of Whangamata is swollen, these vans drive around the houses, selling icecream sundaes.
Very nice treat and kids especially love it. They are drawn out of houses and off the beach looking like the Pied Piper of Hamlin, but the music that the van plays.

What to buy: Flake Sundae!!

What to pay: Less than $NZD2, or thereabouts. Depending of course on what you buy. Pay more if you want a fancy sundae.
