The Information office at Whangamata is well worth a visit. One really good reason to visit, they have on the wall. It is a map of Coromandel Peninsula with most of the beaches and bush walks marked, times to drive to them, and walking times, along with photos of interest. You can see if anything takes your eye and then decide if it's within your time and location schedule. They also have DOC (Department of Conservation) brochures on most of the interest points, some of these cost 50c or $1 each to purchase. But you get good information maps as well as Accommodation books. There is free information as well and of course you can ask the Information Officers first hand about things too.
You can make some boat booking here too. Buy nice souvenirs and postcards.

Great afternoon bushwalk (or morning if that suits!). Short and easy, around 90 mins round trip, not too strenuous. Nice walking shoes required, a few river crossings. Jandels or flip-flops not recommended, but you need Teva's or footwear that is firmly attached to your feet. Take your camera to capture the nice bush and river, and the waterfall!
The river is quite ok to swim in, if you want.

It's Free, It's healthy, It's fun, It's a MUST.
Walk along the beach , get some sea air in your lungs and just meditate as you stroll along and realise you are on the edge of the mighty Pacific and over those seas are USA and South America.
Kick some sand, collect some tumbleweeds and pick up some shells.
I just love it.
Oh and don't forget to get your feet into the water its very good to get them into salt water. Better to take a swim of course, but it's SO cold down here!!!

Even if you visit during the winter months, the beach can be a nice place. Cold, yes, but still fresh and nice.
This photo shows a winter's day, with one or two brave souls walking on the lovely sand. But it's nice not to have huge crowds and you do feel rather alone and nice.
