We loved this Gallery. Its right in the heart of the city. One the cool cafes , "Ujazi" has seats along its front so you look in the windows while you drink and cant help being drawn in to take a closer look. The paintings were very good but they also have very good bronze sculpture, ceramics glass and most importantly incredibly unique jewellery. We found some absolute treasures in there and found it hard to leave. It really is a beautiful shop
What to buy: Fantastic Pounamu. Its hand crafted by numerous local artists and quite different to most of the stuff you see around. (apparently a lot of the stuff sold in comercial shops is made in Asia - not good !
What to pay: As much as you want - be careful. pretty reasonable compared to Auckland prices

You should think about doing a wine tour while you are in Napier taking in a few of the wineries.
What to buy: Napier - or the Hawkes Bay - is one of the premier wine making regions of New Zealand. I love the Savignon Blancs but taste the different wines and buy the ones you like (of course!)
What to pay: Wine might start around the $20 mark and go up to $50 + for the reserve wines.

Emerson Street is the main road of Napier (high street in UK terms), although it's less a road than a pedestrian thoroughfare now. Along this street you'll find your usual array of NZ stores and lots of cafes. It's a nice place to stroll. Keep looking up, above the street level fronts of the buildings and you will see much of Napier's famous Art Deco architecture. A very notable example of a fine Spanish Mission style building is the Criterion Hotel Building on the corner of Emerson and Hastings Streets. That's the end nearest Marine Parade. The building is now a hostel (a good location).

This shop is faithful to Art Deco not just outside, but inside as well, where you can browse or shop for antiques, while music of the time plays in the background.
There is quite a lot of jewellery on display for sale, also from the 1930's time period.

The shop sells a wide range of unique gifts and souvenirs inspired by Napier's architecture and early 20th century design. Free video screenings, complimentary refreshments and information are available. The shop is open from 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day. Slightly shorter hours in winter.

It is fun to walk through Downtown Napier and look at all the Art Deco Store buildings as well as browse through the shops.

Farmers seems to be to New Zealanders what Myer department store is to Australians, and Marks & Spencers is to England.
Quality goods, allt the departments you'd expect, and not too high prices.
