At Eskdale, about ten minutes drive from Napier on state highway 5, heading back to Taupo, you'll come across Whitebay - a lavendar farm. If you time your visit right you might get some spectacular photos. Unfortunately, we missed fields of purple, but did get to sample some of the honey sold there. You can get coffee too. The staff are very friendly and will explain how they distill lavendar oil. There's a shop with lots of lavendar products.

Havelock North is a leafy town south of Napier and just a few minutes' drive southeast of Hastings, the region's second city. The town can justifiably lay claim to being one of the country's prettiest, especially in spring and autumn. I visted in autumn and the town's leafy tree lined streets were certainly very picturesque.
The only drawback with the place is that on weekends it's hard to find a decent place to get a cup of coffee or food after 2pm and, apparently, it's even more dire on Sundays!
Most visitors pass through this town on their way to Te Mata Peak, or the while on a tour of the region's vineyards.
