Icons @ the Tav is a trendy pub/wine bar in the centre of Havelock North. The place offers indoor and outdoor dining. We stopped here for a late lunch on a sunny Saturday in April 2006. Unfortunately the experience was tainted a little bit by the feeling that we were putting the waiting staff out by arriving just before 2pm, when the kitchen closed. We did get something to eat, but watching and hearing the performance made by some of the staff, made us feel we were ruining their day - not the best thing to feel when you're relying on someone making you lunch and helping you enjoy your day.
Unfortunately small town New Zealand is a bit behind the eight-ball when compared to Auckland or Wellington, where a restaurant closing its kitchen at 2pm is virtually unheard of.
I would suggest you avoid Havelock North entirely on a Sunday... if late Saturday afternoon is anything to go by!
