Hawkes Bay Things to Do

  • Marine Parade

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Napier Things to Do

Marine Parade, as the name suggests, runs along the sea front. The area is very nice. The fountain here, we only saw in the day time, but at night it is lit, I think in different colours. THE NEW NAPIER ARCH (1938) commemorates the rebuilding of the city, is not very new any more! There is a colonnade, with two smaller arches, the Veronica...

  • Te Mata Peak

    4.5 out of 5 stars

    Napier Things to Do

From Napier, head to Hastings, then Havelock North, and follow the signs to Te Mata Peak, about 30k's. The Peak, is 400 metres above sea level, and was named after a Maori Chief Ta Mata O Rongokako, a giant of a man, who, acccording to legend, had the misfortune to fall for the beautiful daughter of the Heretaunga chief. Amongst the challenges...

  • Cape Kidnappers.

    5 out of 5 stars

    Napier Things to Do

There are a lot of coastal wineries next to Cape Kidnappers, Elephant Hill, Clearview, Te Awanga Estate, and Beach House Winery. There's a good range from modest to not so, we had a fantastic day cycling around them (rent bikes from www.winecycles.co.nz) after our Gannet Safari. Very flat, easy ride no problem for us "mature" cyclists!

  • Pania of the Reef statue

    Napier Things to Do

I actually stumbled unwittingly upon this bronze in the seaside park though I have to admit I did suspect it had some significance. Now considered one of New Zealand's national treasures, the statue was erected in 1954 to commemorate the Maori legend of the sea maiden who captured the heart of the chief's son but the sea people kept calling her and...

  • Taumata

This is the longest placename in the world: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuaktanatahu. It means the hill where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as Land Eater, played his flute to his lover. Tamatea was a Maori chief that was famous for his long travels,...

  • Explore the Hawkes Bay wine country.

Hawkes Bay is one of New Zealand's and, dare I say it, the world's premier wine districts. Unfortunately, on my 2006 trip to the region, I didn't get time to explore the vineyards. I did call in at the Te Mata Estate near Havelock North briefly, as one of my friends was on a mission to buy her mum a particular wine. If you are interested in...

  • Spend time in Napier.

Napier is the main urban centre in Hawkes Bay Region. The region's port is located here, as are a pleasurable range of tourist sites. The main beach in the town is strictly off limits though. It has very dangerous currents. On my 2006 trip to Hawkes Bay, I was based in Napier. This is probably the best place to stay as the range of restaurants,...

  • Take a peek from the peak!

Te Mata Peak should be at the top of the list of your things to see in Hawkes Bay. It's certainly the top spot for viewing the region! OK, enough of the puns.To get to Te Mata Peak, you will need your own wheels and the road is very narrow in places, so you should be a confident driver. There are several parking areas in the park that surrounds the...
