ANZAC Day - Australia vs NZ celebrations

by amandajayne81

ANZAC Day is a big deal in my home town of Stanthorpe with young and old alike celebrating despite the fact that our area has relatively little military heritage. There are parades and services with speeches and music. I have spent one ANZAC Day in Waipu in the Northland of New Zealand and I must admit I wasn't expecting much but there were some celebrations there. Kiwis do seem to be a lot more laid back about pretty much everything (except Rugby Union!)so you are probably correct it isn't as big of a deal although I do think they are just as proud.

Who are the Maoris?

by SLLiew

When visiting New Zealand for the first time, many tourists will look forward to see more of Maori culture. On the televison, we have seen foreign VIP visitors rubbing noses with local NZ maoris. Also we see the "haka" performed by the NZ rugby team and fearsome facial expression and threatening tongue. While NZ, I found that at museums as well tourist places, there are Maori performances of dances, songs as well as food cooked and served in traditional Maori ways. Interestingly, Maori is one of the 3 official languages. The other two are English and New Zealand Sign Language.

Walking barefooted

by SLLiew

I first saw this at a parking lot at a supermarket. A family of four "white" Kiwis (Pakehas) all walking from the car to the supermarket without wearing any shoes. Not sure why. Just do not be surprised and staring is rude. Excellent foot reflexology and save money on buying shoes.Since then, I have heard that some airlines officially announce that all passengers must wear shoes to board the plane.
