There is a wind farm situated on the ranges above Ashhurst, and also on the adjoining Tararua Ranges. They can be seen from the viewing platform in Ashhurst at the domain.
Go for a drive over the saddle rd and visit the wind farm, its an interesting sight indeed.
Why not have a 1/2 day trip and drive through the Manawatu george to Woodville on the eastern side of the gorge. There are some great 2nd hand/antique shops there and also a great cheese factory.
After shopping and eating, drive back via the saddle road to Ashhurst and stop at the wind farm and have a look round.
You get to see some typical NZ scenery here, and also drive some of the country roads.
The Manawatu Gorge is the main traffic way from the east coast to the manawatu. The road is often closed due to slips in the winter. Its not a dangerous drive at all, but interesting.
The American Military during WW2 wanted to build a bridge down the centre of the gorge for the entire length, they for some unknown reason were not allowed to.
Also during the war, the current road was set for instant destruction with explosives if there happened to be an invasion
This is a very scenic drive that you can take that is enjoyable. There is much to see and are various picinic spots tucked away.
There are also some really nice places selling afternoon teas, (and the normal country pubs or course.)
