I am staying in a flat right on the Square in the centre of town and I can tell you Palmerston North goes off every Friday and Saturday night. Mercy, the loud music, the shouting, the fights, the bottles smashing, the revving cars.
Below my lounge window is a kind of a secluded courtyard so people gather to partake of illegal substances or to scream at each other.
Across the yard is a gay club and the music echoes around the concrete canyon and when it closes at 3am the bartender throws bottles into the skip right under my window.
Gee I am turning into a grumpy old woman.
But one Staurday night I met a nice young man who was a black belt in karate and who was at a loose end so he escorted me around various night life venues so I could observe.
We met at a cafe called Barista in George Street which closed at eleven so we went down to Regents Arcade to see what we could see.
First off we tried the Celtic Inn which seemed quite jolly and friendly, if a little low rent.
Then we went across the way to a bar called The Fish.
But oh dear. I couldn't stay there. The music was thumping and the tank of traumatised fish (who can feel vibrations) really upset me. Very cruel, that. Worse than live crayfish tanks in restaurants.
We walked past an agreeable little place called the Old Skool because time was getting on and I wanted to have a look at what was happening in the Square.
PS I went back and took all these photos the next day.
