The train station is now a long long way from the centre of town. It was shifted in the 60s, leaving a lovely old hotel called The Railway Hotel, high and dry.
There is a commuter train called the Capital Connection that runs week days, leaving Palmy at 6-20 and returning from Wellington at 5-17.
It costs $24 and is very comfortable, with a little canteen. I don't appreciate machine coffee though.
In Palmy you buy your non designated ticket (or a ten trip) from the Visitors Info in the Square or I have been told you can buy it on the train.
The station is like a ghost house when you turn up there at the crack of dawn, and there are no unlocked toilets. Which made it uncomfortable for some early birds who arrived just after me.
Lovely view of the Kapiti Coast, mind, as dawn breaks.
Taxi fare from the Square in the centre of town is just over $10.

Once upon a time you would catch the train to Palmy, in fact the train went right through the middle of town. But in the 60s they shifted the line and the station to the outskirts of town and now people catch the bus to Wellington, or Tauranga, or wherever. I find it best to book on line because you can get cheaper fares.
The fares are variable according to how popular the service is. For instance to Wellington the fares range from $11 up to $26.
The terminus is convenient to the centre of town on the corner of Pitt and Main Street.
The staff and drivers are usually agreeable and the service is usually only delayed for acts of god, like snow on the Desert Road.
I just wish they wouldn't play that awful music so loudly. It drives me nuts.
