Mozzies spend about 8 months of the year living on a plain diet of locals blood, but come summer time they know they can have a change and they go for it! Just as we may have something special to eat at Xmas, like a ham, the mozzies have tourists blood!
They wait until dusk or dark ..... and there is no wind ...... then they attack!
Tapotupotu is one of their favourite holiday spots as there is a high turnover of campers and therefore alot of variety for their diet. When the conditions are right, no wind and dusk / dark, they gather together in their thousands and swarm around in clouds. If you walk through them don't breathe in too hard as they can go up your nose or in your mouth.
If they get access to your tent, they can even bite you through your socks and on the soles of your feet.
They also are know to holiday at Kapo Wairua - Spirits Bay.
Mozzies usually don't hang around Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) too much, as there is usually a constant breeze up there and wind means no mozzies.
Make sure you have mozzie coils for your tent and mozzie repellent for yourself.
