    Hole in the Rock

The 'Hole in the Rock', properly known as Piercy Island is a rocky island at the northern tip of Cape Brett in the Bay of Islands. This natural feature has been caused by years of water and wind erosion.

It is a popular trip for visitors to the Bay of Islands and on calm days some boats will drive through it.

The weather on the day I took the cruise was fine and sunny although a strong wind made going through the hole too dangerous.

    Bay of Islands: Net Ridding

On the way back to town, the boat allowed a few of the insane passengers to venture into the freezing cold water to ride a net. Sorry folks, but I?m from a tropical country so I gave this a miss. The last thing I wanted is a case of pneumonia on my last few days on the road :).

    Bay of Islands: Urukapuka Is

We then continued on our journey as we headed back into the bay. We stopped at the north side of Urukapuka Is for a picnic lunch. I decided to leave the large group at the beach as I headed up to the hills. The view from the top was astounding with full 360 degree views of the vast green islands, the crystal clear blue sea, and more. The grass on this island was so thick that one will fall deep into it on every step taken. It made for a perfect natural mattress where I got to relax and take a nap. For those interested, you can stay overnight at the basic accommodation ran by Fullers.

    Bay of Islands: the Cathedral

Soon after the Hole in the Rock, we got to see the nearby Cathedral cave formation. The boat actually went into this huge cave. It is a modern representation on the geological erosion caused by the waves and tide. Perhaps in a million or so years this cave will be another hole in this rock.

Bay of Islands: Hole in the Rock

After a fulfilling view of dolphins, we kept on going past the South side of Urukapuka Is, which is the largest island in the bay. We then went to the edge of the bay, past the lighthouse in Cape Bret, towards the infamous "Hole in the Rock". On a normal day you can ride the boat straight through it, but today the water was far too choppy for that. Once more, the view of the rock was good enough for me.

    Hole in the Rock

This is an amazing rock formation where your boat will attempt to go through the hole in the rock. It depends on the weather and sea condition, but the gap for the boat to pass through takes some skill in navigation.

This is a fast trip to/and hopefully through the Hole in the Rock. The hole they go through is in the picture. Unfortunately the sea was too rough once we got out there but the trip was still pretty exciting and worthwhile.

    where's the hole?

A group of my new friends decided to take a high speed boat tour of the Bay of Islands on the Excitor. We saw the famous “Hole in the Rock” as well as many other beautiful scenes. This whole region is filled with the most beautiful blue water and amazing island views.
