Reva's On The Waterfront: Harbour Views, Fine Dining
Reva's is a nice (and more often than not) busy little restaurant that has beautiful views due to its location on the harbour. Watch the sunset over a glass of wine/beer or watch as the boats pull in from a day out at sea.
Chances of meeting other tourists from around the world are very high here as many sail into our harbour and spend a few days or simply fall in love with the place and make it their home.
Sit out in the gazebo during warmer weather or on the verandah during either summer or winter. Inside/outside dining makes it a perfect spot for your meals.
At this restaurant, there is a large range of various different foods and the most difficult thing about it all.....is what to choose!
Reva's is very well known in Whangarei for her pizza's. Regular, Deluxe, Special, Hawaiian, Vegetarian, Smoked Salmon, Mexican, Greek, Thai Chicken, Seafood.
Or alternatively, you could try something else. The fresh catch of the day (fish), crisply pan seered with a hint of garlic, mild chilli and white wine perhaps. Baked Chicken glazed with honey, ginger, garlic and wasabi. Salmon Fillet encrusted with kelp and dill. Pork Scotch Fillet marinated in soy, ginger, garlic and lime. And the list goes on and on and on.
Favorite Dish: Indian Style Lamb Rack is definately worth trying. It is served over spicey taboulleh with an Indian style ratatouille and curried yoghurt sauce accompanied by a toasted papadom.
Killer Prawn: Seafood, Seafood, Seafood
Killer Prawn is situated right in the heart of the city. It is the only west facing bar/restaurant in Whangarei and has the sun streaming in from the early afternoon.
If you are keen on cocktails - this place will certainly leave an impression on you, although do bear in mind these drinks come at a relatively high cost.
Of course what would KP be without prawns (aka shrimps). 'Killer Prawn' the legend is spicey prawns in a tomato rosemary immersion. Wok Fried Prawns is seved in a Thai coconut and tomato sauce with tropical fruits. Pan Simmered Prawns is in a basil pesto and parmesan cream. Garlic Prawns are pan fried in nut brown lemon garlic butter. Sun Drenched Mediterranean Style Prawns are roasted with dried tomatoes, fresh tomato, button mushroom, kalamata olives, roast capsicum, feta, red onion and garlic.
As well as the prawns, there are fresh green lipped mussels, smoked salmon mousse, oysters, seafood soups, sushi, tuna and New Zealand Whitebait Fritters (an absolute must try).
For those who are not so keen on seafood, they also offer steak, chicken etc.
NOTE: The price range for the prawns is possibly more expensive than that of other dishes.
At various times of the year, KP has different events held. Queens Birthday weekend is definately a happening weekend at this place. Queens Birthday weekend is usually the first weekend in June. The Drag Queens Birthday Bash held at this time of the year is definately worth going to. It is a night of fun, entertainment and a lot of laughs. If you males out there are brave enough, throw on a wig, maybe some fishnet stockings, false eyelashes or whatever you can get your hands on and go have fun. Who knows, you may even win a prize!!
Favorite Dish: Whitebait fritters!!! Don't knock them til you try them. You just may be back for more :-)
Bogarts Cafe: Pizza With Attitude
Bogarts is a funky pizza place that has a really fun feel to it. It has unique designs inside the building that make it very modern and trendy. Somewhere where you can hang out with friends and or family and just relax, eat good food and enjoy the music. This restaurant is fully licensed, so enables you to enjoy a wine/beer with your meal.
Aside from pizza's you also have the choice of pork, chicken, steak and lamb with salads and vegetables.
Favorite Dish: "The Godfather" pizza is scrummy. It consists of tomato, cheese, garlic, salami, onion and capsicum. It's full of flavour and goes down a real treat.
The Dickens Inn: A dickens of a pub
Great friendly pub atmosphere with Dickens period decor. Good service
Favorite Dish: I had the special which was a Shepherd's Pie - a tasty lamb stew served in an individual casserole topped with mashed potato. It was a large serve but I took the rest home and had it for breakfast.
Mum had the fish & chips and salad.

Savoeun's: Good Food
This cafe is one of my favourites. It is a little out of the way from the city centre of Whangarei, but well worth it in my opinion. It is a small shop in a suburban area. The food is averagely priced with well above average quality.
The staff are very friendly and will cater to your needs/wants where possible.
A great place to stop in, particularly if you are headed to the museum and kiwi house.
Favorite Dish: The sole reason I shop here is due to their choc/caramel slice. It's absolutely yummy!!! So delectably good that when you bite into it, the chocolate and caramel all squishes up between your teeth and tastes divine.
They make other cakes, scones and slices as well as filled rolls, sandwiches and panini's.

Mondo's: Tasty food on the waterfront!
This popular eatery in the 'town basin' is a place I've stopped for lunch on every road trip north. The food is tasty and imaginatively presented. Service is smart and you can choose to eat inside or outside under big umbrellas. The coffee's very good.
Their all day breakfast menu is simple mouth-watering.
You can get cold beer here.
Favorite Dish: Eggs Benedict with bacon.

Mondo's Cafe: Waste of time
The only good thing about this cafe was the location. I ordered the Mondo's breakfast asking for no mushrooms specifying I'm allergic, surprise surprise there was mushrooms. When I asked that it go back to the kitchen the server rolled his eyes and pushed mushrooms off with his fork leaving mushroom sauce and juice all over the rest of the food. The toast was thick and dry with nothing on it, sausage tasted old, inedible.
Our order was mixed up with 2 other orders and the table had spilled drink and crusts from the previous people, after 10 minutes and asking 3 times the table was eventually wiped down.
Expensive for such poor quality food and service.

Amici: Great Italian
Amici's is a great, seemingly authentic (I say seemingly because I have never been to Italy) Italian restaurant in lovely Quality Street. The staff are very friendly, I have eaten here many times and am yet to have a bad experience! Check out the blackboard specials outside, some of these are great value. Choose whether you want to eat outside or inside.
Favorite Dish: Their pizzas are fantastic!

Snapper Rock: Great Food and the Spiralina is superb!
It's a lovely setting, the food is good and they have a good selection of different stuff to suit all tastes. Plus having a chilled glass of wine, looking over Tutukaka Marina is pretty special really.
Favorite Dish: Anything with fish in it - is lovely! Especially the Swordfish or fresh Tuna!
Sonic: Fusion food at it's best
Went here on my last night before heading back to London and was surprised by how lovely the food was. When I saw the prices on the menu I was a little shocked as it was a little overpriced, I thought. But in actual fact the food was worth it! Everthing was delicious and fresh!
Favorite Dish: Everything was good but the dessert - death by chocolate - was by far the best thing that has ever past my lips!!
Reva's is a little bit of a institution in Whangarei. When it first opened it was known for it's pizza and Jazz evenings. It then moved next door to the bowling alley and that's where I first experienced her truly awesome pizza's! We would hang out there nearly every week! Reva's is also famous for some very controversial customers. A few members of the French espionage team that blew up the Rainbow Warrior went to dinner there, stupidly signing their own names in the guest book. I guess they thought they wouldn't get caught!
Reva's is now situated down by the Marina and is a thriving restaurant, a favourite amond the boaties that visit. And she has branched out to other dishes from just pizza. It's a perfect place to go at Sunset on a hot evening and sit on the veranda to sup wine and eat gourmet pizzas!
Favorite Dish: I haven't eaten there for so long but I do remember the Greek pizza being a particular favourite. That's if she still does it.
Kebabs & Cafe: Good Turkish food.
I stopped for lunch here on a recent trip to Whangarei. Filling meals are provided at reasonable costs.
