If not hiring a car while in NZ then this would be my number 1 choice :-)

Getting Around Whangarei
The Whangarei Bus Service is not too bad for getting around on. At certain times of the day it can be very busy, mostly due to school and work. The buses are quite small (not full sized coaches).
Adult fare is: $2 per person, per ride
Child aged 5 -14 is:$1 per person, per ride
Under 5 is free
Buses dont run every half hour or hour so ask a bus driver at the Rose Street Bus Terminal for a timetable!!

InterCity Coachlines To Whangarei
InterCity Coachlines travel everyday between Auckland and Whangarei as well as other cities around NZ. They have large panoramic windows and are air conditioned.
Bookings are essential. Intercity coaches would be my second choice of coachlines to travel to Whangarei from Auckland (only due to price).
Some of their buses have toilets on board, but as far as I am aware, it is not the ones that travel between Auckland and Whangarei. Restroom stops are made during the journey though.
I will list pricing within next couple of days!!

Dial a driver
If you have hired a vehicle and have driven it into the town for the evening - but after a few wines with your meal, you suddenly feel like having a few more.... Don't be put off. Since NZ has strict drink driving laws and you have had a bit too much, you can ring dial a driver and they will pick you and your car up and deliver you back to where you are staying.
Brilliant if you are staying at a camp ground miles out of town!!!!!
I don't know the phone number but if you ask around you'll find someone who knows what it is!
Getting around Whangarei
Getting around the town centre of Whangarei is simple - you walk. Public transport in NZ is sadly not as good as we would often like it to be, but it is improving year by year, and you can find information about the bus service here: http://www.nrc.govt.nz/Transport/Getting-around/Whangarei-Bus-Service/
