(Review by John)
As a visitor to Taupo I would not have found this restaurant, as it is a couple of blocks tucked away from the main strip of cafés and restaurants closer to Taupo's lakeside. I was taken there by a local, and it was immediately clear why this place is so popular with those who know about it.
"Plateau" is in a very modern building, cleverly designed to provide distinct areas where you can enjoy a beer in the bar or dine outside on a mild summer evening.
The beer choice is extensive, and includes many of NZ's boutique beers not always readily available in larger bars.
The food choice is also extensive, with a bar menu, restaurant menu, and the night I was there also boasted a curry menu.
Favorite Dish: I had the salmon on a taragon mash and spinach. It was delicious, nicely presented and had a great array of flavours.

The host of our motel recommended this restaurant in the old town center and it was a good tip. We had to wait for a table because it was a bit packed. But it was well worth it.
Favorite Dish: Try their steaks, they are delicious.

It may have a bit of a naff name, or perhaps it's a bit of an optimistic name, but certainly the food was very nice, so it pretty much lived up to it.
The restaurant was busy, yet the service was excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed everything we had.
Favorite Dish: Moo Yang Nam Jim

This restaurant is right on the front in Paihia.
You can sit and have a drink with your lunch whilst looking out over the bay.
We had a very nice pizza, and they had draught beer which was excellent.
Favorite Dish: Seafood pizza = best seafood pizza I've ever had with really nice selection of seafood.

Cafe Paradiso is the place where the hip young crowd can be found. It offers French and Italian cuisine in a rather chic setting. Main courses average around NZ$16-20.00. There is also a bar and good coffee. It's located on the corner of Courtney Place and Blair St
