Drive up to Dawson Falls Visitors Centre and get a feel of being on the mountain.
Naturally it is a volcano, considered dormant and not extinct.
Mount Taranaki, or Mount Egmont as it's been known for years, dominates the region and effects it in so many ways, and last erupted 250 years ago.
With the classic situation of the moist westerly winds being forced to drop their load when hitting the mountain, there are several micro climates formed around the area.
This benefits the whole region and encourages the birdlife for one.
Just being on the mountain can help your get a feel for this phenomena.
