The town is three and a half to four hours` drive from Auckland and just over five from Wellington.
There are many charter and cruise companies that offer cruises on the lake from the fast speed boat variety to leisurely cruising. Many fishing trips are also organised solely for this purpose.

Taupo is a very popular destination for tourists and kiwis alike as there is so much to see and do in the area. State Highway One runs through the town so if you are travelling through the North Island it is likely you will at least pass through Taupo.
For travellers who are going from Auckland to Wellington, Taupo is a great place to stop over a night to break up the journey.
