    McDonald's: McDC-3

    by John195123 Written Feb 17, 2014

I'm not the type to frequent American fast food joints while traveling. I really despise that idea, but there is one McDonald's that may be worth a visit in the city of Taupo. Yes, that's a DC-3 (I believe). I'm not sure of the back-story here, but it is original, if nothing else!

    Edgewater: Top Quality NZ Cuisine

    by salisbury3933 Written Sep 24, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

An idyllic setting overlooking the water, some excellent food, and some top quality service makes this a great place to have dinner.

It's the sort of place that I seldom get to these days, so it was a rare treat and we really enjoyed it.

My wife chose the venison, and I had a scotch fillet steak. With drinks the bill came to $230. That's a fair bit more than we would normally spend but it's nice to splurge occasionally.

    I really recommend this restaurant.

Dixie Brown's: Nice and warm on a cold wet night

    by al2401 Written Aug 24, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It was a cold wet night so the restaurant was warm and friendly - also busy. Service was good.

Favorite Dish: I had the Lamb Shank in a cranberry and rosemary jus which was delicious and so tender. My mother had a steak with mushroom sauce.

Chill restaurant and bar: Good steaks!

    by salisbury3933 Written Jun 4, 2006

We enjoyed the service and the food here, with the steaks being really quite excellent. It's next to the Suncourt motor lodge, and the food is of a high quality. It is a little expensive, but it's worth it.

Take A Break Café: Room to relax especially in cold weather.

by kiwi Updated Oct 14, 2005

This Café is situated in the middle of the main shopping area, and although not outwardly stunning, I found it to have many attributes worthy of recommendation.
Venture down the back part of the café and you will find more room, with lounge-like features. Taupo services the ski patrons during the cold months, so you are likely to be here when it's cold. There is a lovely big fireplace down the back with nice comfy sofas to rest on. As well, you can sit at one of the tables, hook to a power point and use your laptop and wireless connection to clear your emails in comfort.
The rear area is children friendly, so most of your family or group can enjoy this café for various features.

Villino Restaurant and Café.: Fancy a bit of Italian food?

by kiwi Updated Jul 13, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The food is Italian of course. The ambience is rustic with charm, and summertime sees the tables spill out onto the footpath. You almost feel like you are in Europe, but also reminded you are in Taupo, New Zealand, South Pacific. paradise!

This restaurant is attached to the prawn farm, and there are no prizes for guessing what this restaurant's specialty is. It's good, but not cheap.
