State Highway One goes right through the main part of town, and you can experience traffic delays here. Generally it's not for too long, as it's only a small town. Taupo hosts many popular events and often during these the traffic numbers increase greatly as it does during peak holiday times.
If it's a large event and you want to miss this, then go round the western side of Lake Taupo but you must make this decision before you get to Taupo (from both directions).
As you can see from the photo, the lakefront section is only one lane in both directions.
Just be aware of this possibility and perhaps research any events that may cause delays if you see this as a problem. Otherwise just a little patience and you will get through no worries.
