Fran's Cafe: A bit of olde world charm with Modern food

by shelnlin Updated Apr 11, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fran's Cafe is a delight to visit and many a visitor will be instantly attracted to the many different Tea pots (not for sale) that are on display in her Coffee shop. The atmosphere is relaxed and guests can enjoy a delicous lunch which can be anything from a Thai beef Salad to a simple Macaroni cheese. Fran serves a wide variety of foods here which also include sandwiches, pies, pastries, various sweet cakes and slices and there is often a selection of hot meals to choose from as well as various salads. Each week there is something new to choose and the menu is often rotated now and again so you will get the chance to have your favourite dish if you pop in. It is popular with both the locals and visitors alike and always busy. Dining can be outside in Fran's courtyard or inside where there are nice wooden chairs and tables or around the corner into the "lounge" like room where you may sit in a rocking chair with a coffee table. There are many displays of artworks on display and these are for sale, Fran also sells preserves on behalf of a local preserve maker and these can be seen in her big hutch dresser. There is plenty of magazines to read too, if you are alone and want to read while you eat. Fran also caters for special occassions too. Fran's is open five days a week and up until around three on Saturdays. They are not open on a Sunday. It feels like home in here!

Favorite Dish: It is really hard to say what my favourite dish is from this place as it is all very good and it has always been very fresh as if it has been made that morning. I am particularly partial to her rich Macaroni cheese but can only take it in small doses as it is very very rich and it is obviously made with cream. I also enjoy her Thai beef Salad too and at $5.00 for a small serving it is certainly very good value. I am also partial to her Morrocan curry too and her sushi in the summertime is also nice for a change. In a nutshell I haven't come across anything yet that I have not enjoyed. I wish I had asked Fran while I was at home if I could take a pic of one her lovely dishes!

The Lily Pad Café: Country Café and Art

by kiwi Updated Oct 31, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's a short drive out of Cambridge into the more rural area to find The LilyPad Café, but well worth the effort.
The setting is made more interesting with the inclusion of garden art and an art shop in the grounds.
Staff are friendly, the feeling is warm and interesting and the place is bustling with activity. People often come from far and wide to experience Lily Pad, which is a testiment to its success.

    Open Tues. - Sun. 8.00 AM - 4.00 PM

    Summertime hours could be longer.

Favorite Dish: I've only been here twice, so forming a 'favourite' dish is not yet possible. However I did have the Organic Chicken salad off the menu which was simply divine!!

    Organic Chicken Salad $16

A salad of chicken poached on the bone, shredded and crisped in a pan with basil and roasted red pepper, then tossed together with caper berries, peppered cottage cheese, roasted almonds, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and house dressing through fresh salad greens.
