  • Go Kayaking up the Raglan Harbour

The benefits of Raglan are that it has both an ocean beach for surfing as well as a quiet inner harbour that can be explored in small boat or kayak. One of the things to do is hire a kayak off Raglan Kayak and go for an explore of the upper harbour. They operate from two locations: In town at the Bow Street jetty by the water as well as at the Wharf...

  • Model plane and glider flying

The lookout overlooking Ocean Beach is a fabulous spot for model plane and glider flying. The day we were there a group of guys had a mix of planes and gliders they were putting through there paces. Really incredible to watch the skill these guys had.

  • Manu Bay Surfing - Raglan - NZ's West...

Manu Bay which is also known by its local name of Waireke is primarily a surfing beach and is world famous for its left-hand break. This picture was taken when the break was quite small. Apparently surfers come from around the world to compete in the international surfing competition held here every summer.

  • Estuary Swimming

Te Kopua Beach is right next to town across the footbridge. This is a popular family swimming spot as you can swim in the calm waters of the estuary. It is close to the motorcamp as well as the point where you can go fishing.

  • Swimming - Ocean

Raglan’s Ocean Beach provides spectacular views of the Raglan Bar and is a wonderful picnic spot as well as good for swimming (if the surf isn't too big). Lifeguards patrol the western end of the beach during the summer months. It is safest to swim between the flags, as there can be strong undertows at other areas of the beach making swimming...

  • Long romantic walks

Raglan's Ocean beach is a fabulous place to take a long walk. You can access the beach by the surf club and walk towards Raglan heads and the famous bar (sand bar not the other kind). Lots of lovely black sand and sand dunes.

  • Surfing

Raglan's Ocean Beach has a fabulous reputation for surfing as well as bodyboarding. If you don't have your own board there are plenty of places to hire one. Even on the days when the swell isn't that large you can still have a great time.Ocean Beach is also known as Ngarunui Beach and can be found 5km west of town.

  • Raglan Classic Car and Rock n Roll...

If you time your arrive in Raglan at the right time you will be able to either participate in or view the Raglan Classic Car and Rock n Roll Festival. In 2010 it is being held on 13th and 14th February between 9am to 3pm.

  • Raglan and Bridal Veil Falls

Raglan is a quaint little surfing community located on the west coast of the North Island about an hour west of Hamilton. It's a small town with a few shops and restaurants but it's biggest attraction is the waves...recorded as the longest left-hand break in the world (although I've been told that is in Pavones, Costa Rica, so who knows?) There are...

Raglan Restaurants

  • Been around a long time

Vinnies has been in Raglan for over 14 years and has forged a good reputation during that time. Although not the original owners, not much has changed. Residing in an historic Kauri cottage, you can buy local arts here as well. A Café by day, and Restaurant by night, there is something to suit most here. An easy short walk from the Hotel, and close...

  • Best Pizza's in town ???

Billing themselves as the "best pizza's around" Costa offer a selection of both meat and vegetarian pizza's where you can eat in the garden.

  • Real Fruit Icecream

A great little Ice cream shop and Kebab place on Bow Street. They have fabulous waffle cones with your choice of traditonal "flavoured" icecream, like my two favourites, Hokey Pokey and Orange Choc Chip, as well as real fruit icecreamm which they blend up whislt you are there. A must do on a hot sunny day.

  • Great Little Cafe

Great little cafe in the main street of Raglan. A mix of hot food off the menu as well as from the cabinet. Lots of seating but not too crowded which was great. Art on the walls was of a high quality and was for sale.A good place to chill out and get out of the sun. Carrot and Zuccini slice.

Great food and atmosphere...both indoors and outside. Quick and friendly service and not too expensive. Serve coffee, teas, smoothies, pizza, soups, salads, burgers, fish, pasta, and some toher random things. Thai squid rings and a spirulina smoothie.

Raglan Warnings and Dangers

  • Dogs Not Allowed in Town

Dogs are not allowed on the footpaths in town during the day. This restriction is from 8am to 6pm and the fine if caught is a hefty $NZD300!! Footpaths (pavements) are clearly marked so you can't plead ignorance in this case. Dogs can't read as you will see in the photo, but nor do they pay fines, so it's up to the dog's owner to comply with this...

  • Not always free camping on coast.

Along the coastline at Raglan, it is not always possible to park and stay overnite in campervan or tents. So don't be disappointed to see these signs and always abide by them. There is a wonderful campground not far from the town, right by the water. It's a lovely place to stay, and not too expensive.Read more about the campground here.

Raglan Off The Beaten Path

  • Bridal Veil Falls - Kawhia Road, Raglan

Bridal Veil Falls is a beautiful 55m waterfall just outside the town of Raglan (13 kms). It is also within reasonable driving distance from the city of Hamilton. To get there heading towards Raglan, turn left off State Highway 23 to Te Mata. Once past the little village of Te Mata, turn left on to Kawhia Road (this is a no exit road) and continue on...

  • Bush Walking

There are alot of tracks and walks around Raglan that cater for the fit and not so fit (I classify myself in the latter category :) An easy walk which is around 13 kms out of town and which is a nice cool walk to do on a hot day is the walk to the top of the Bridal Veil Falls. This is only 10 mins from the carpark which is on Kawhia Road and is...

Raglan Favorites

  • Go across the Footbridge.

If you have some time while visiting Raglan, I recommend walking over the footbridge and taking a walk over the sand dunes. Also it's nice to see the town from that side as well. Watching small Maori kids jumping off the footbridge into the sea at high tide. They were having such fun!!

  • Sheep farming area.

The area and farmland around Raglan is prime sheep raising land. However being as hilly as it is, it's more common for them to sell their lambs at about 12 - 15 weeks old to be "fattened" down on the flatter land ready for the meat market. Here in this photo we were picking lambs to buy and take back to our Waikato farm where we will keep them...

  • Activities in the area.

There are many activities to be seen out on the West Coast of the North Island. Here in the photo you can see a glider, frolicking in the airwaves created by the westerly wind hitting the cliffs and being pushed upwards. You can see, from time to time, some of the following activities out on the coast:Parapenting.Kite surfing.Land...
