Hamilton Airport is one of the smaller International Airports, but is fast growing. For international travel you can reach destinations in Australia and also to the Islands of Fiji in the Pacific.
However it is also a very convenient connection for domestic travel to the rest of the country. Boeing 737s fly sectors to major South Island cities, and ATR's and other models fly sectors to smaller towns. Easily accessible and with fine carpark facilities, it also has Duty Free shopping (limited) and most amenities albeit on a smaller scale than the big airports. For people living in the Waikato region, it is a great convenience to fly from here than to drive all the way to Auckland.
For travellers, visiting Waitomo Caves for example, Hamilton Airport is handy too.

Sarah and I ventured out on our trip to enjoy Rotorua by renting a vehicle from Europcar in Auckland's CBD. It ended up saving us quite a bit of money not to rent from the airport location, because it was 10-15 NZD per day less than what we had quoted over the internet.
We drove all around Waikato, which was a truly beautiful drive, and was the best transportation option from Auckland.
We ended up paying 135 NZD for 4 days rental, including unlimited mileage. Our vehicle was a Peugeot, and it ran nicely... with plenty of room for the two of us.
