These small town taverns are often worth a visit.
The Friday Night Bar meals are fairly popular with the locals too. If you are in the area, this could be an opportunity to dine with real country kiwis!
But be aware, Waihou and this little pub, are not close to the River walk. The walk is named after the Waihou River not Waihow township.

Conveniently positioned about half way along the Waihou Walkway track, is this very 'modern' Bio Loo. Basic and spartan, but functional and relatively clean all the same. Beats sitting on a thornbush or having animals watch while you relieve yourself in the woods. And it's environmentally friendly, ever so important these days. Just spinkle some of the provided sawdust after use, and this will help prevent bad odours from the loo.

This river is entirely Spring fed, and because of the purity of the water, it appears incredibly blue. I've read that 67% of NZ's bottled water comes from this spring. The beauty is stunning, especially the native bush surrounding the river banks. The smell alone, of nature is worth the experience of this walk. You can even see the fish swimming up the river, and the birds twitter all around.

Try your hand at fishing in the river. You need a license, and a rod with spoons or lures. Brown river trout are the 'catch' and you can see a small one here in the photo.
This is a public walk, marked at both ends. Suggest you take two vehicles and park on at both ends so you can retrieve the other and avoid having to make the return trek along the river. Unless you have all the time in the world of course, the walk is more beautiful. Normally the walk (without fishing) takes 90 minutes one way.

The picturesque Waihou River is most beautiful at it's source, not near Waihou town, but closer to the town of Putaruru. Apparently at the main Blue Spring, the water comes from the ground at a rate...
