PAUA SHELL FACTORY: PAUA SHELL

by balhannah

PAUA SHELL FACTORY is at the town of CARTERTON and is "The home of New Zealand’s unique Abalone – the Paua."You can wander throught the factory on weekdays to see Paua, Pink Mussel & Mother of Pearl shells being carved by the craftsmen. (Factory closed for Christmas from 18th December 2009 to 11th January 2010) Or Watch a video on the life of the Paua while enjoying a complimentary tea or coffee. An Aquarium is on display, with live Paua and creatures.I came here to pick up a nice small, light gift to take home. I bought some nice ear rings, with paua shell, it changes colour when you look at it at different angles. They also have small pieces for sale in bags which I bought for the family to put around photo frames. You could use them for many crafty items. The range of quality jewellery, gifts, ornaments is extensive.Paua World is open every day of the year, with the exception of...

Early to bed, early to rise

by craic

I like lots of milk in my tea, and hotels never supply enough. So I nipped around into Kitchener Street to a little shop I had noticed - not exactly what the locals call a Dairy - it seemed to sell a lot of takeaway food as well as newspapers and smokes etc - but I was sure it would have milk.It was about 3pm so I wasn't at all worried about it being open. But it was shut. The sign said it opened at 3 am (3am!!!!!) and closed at 1pm. What was going on?I got my milk by going around to the IGA in Jellicoe Street. And the next day I asked why they were such larks. They told me it was for the shearers. They get going early and want their pies and drinks and newspapers and smokes.I think it might also be for the vineyard workers. Vines are so labour intensive.

Early opener.
Parkvale Mushrooms: Great Mushrooms

by salisbury3933

These Mushrooms are grown and sold in the Wairarapa, and are a personal favourite of mine. Pick them up at any of the fruit and vege places on SH2, or visit the factory outside of Carterton at Parkvale, you need to turn right once you are in Carterton and head out into the country, it is signposted. They have a number of different varieties, great on the BBQ.

Mushrooms, these were $10 altogether

The Paua Shell Factory and Shop: Paua from the factory

by vtveen

This shop or factory has everything what has been made of paua (or abalone). And believe that is a lot. Most of them are more or less knick knacks. But off course there are very special things to buy, like paua jewellery.Perhaps more interesting is the free factory tour to see how the rough shells are being crafted. There is also an informative video about the life of the Paua. At least buy one paua shell. from 1 NZD till ......

Fruit and Veg

by salisbury3933

There are plenty of roadside shops along State Highway 2 selling fruit and vegetables from the adjoining orchard/farms. You can get some pretty good bargains, and some good produce
