Wairarapa Connection

This train is mostly used by commuters from the Wairarapa who work in Wellington, but is also used by daytrippers.It's a very pleasant trip, north of Upper Hutt there's a long tunnel through to the Wairarapa, and after that the journey takes you through farmland with nice scenery the whole way.You can get a one day pass for $15 for individuals, or $30 for a group of up to 4.In the weekends there are two trains a day each way. On weekdays there are more services, but they tend to follow commuting patterns, i.e. several trains from Masterton to Wellington in the morning and vice versa in the afternoon. There are however a few trains during the day as well.

In addition to the trains, there are several bus routes in the Wairarapa. These will particularly be of interest to those who are going to Martinborough.Check the metlink website for timetable details.

The Rimutakas

State Highway 2 from Wellington takes you over the Rimutaka hills to the Wairarapa. It's worth stopping at the summit to take in the views on either side of the hill.
