There are very strict quarantine checks and heavy fines to protect NZ important agriculture from diseases and pests that can be brought in by incoming tourists.

On the airplane, there will be announcement to the effect and a quarantine declaration form to ask you to tick that you are not bringing in
    a) meat and animal products
    b) seeds, plants, fruit or vegetables
    c) equipment used with animals or for camping
    d) airline food banned products.

If unsure, you can declare to show the officers. If not allowed, it will be dumped into a big "amnesty" waste basket. So best not to bring any fresh food products.

Processed food are allowed. Wood products are also checked as well as camping equipment and the sole of your shoes if there are soil that can carry pests.

    Official statement on form:
"New Zealand is an island nation. Quarantine regulations are therefore necessary to protect our country from the introduction of unwanted pests and diseases from overseas. Please help us by answering all of the questions.
WARNING: If you do not declare ALL FRUITS, MEAT, PLANTS, ANIMALS or other quarantine items in your possession you may be fined up to $100, 000 or imprisoned up to 5 years.

If you are not sure about it DECLARE IT"

P/S: I brought mooncakes, declared them and they were allowed in.

When you visit the wonderful volcanic thermal pools and geysers, beware of the smell of sulfur and gases that are exuded. It can smell like rotten eggs or worst. If you have a over sensitive nose or throat, take something along that will alleviate the attack.

But it is worth the smell to see some beautiful sights of mother nature at work.
