RUGBY is a culture in New Zealand and in every City, provincial town, household, workplace etc you name it, everyone talks about it and a fair few actually play the game!!

This photo is of a game of rugby at the new Wellington Stadium affectionately known as 'The Cake Tin' given it's near circular shape.

  • We have many different cultures in Wellington, and one thing New Zealand does not really go in for, like in the States is tipping in restaurants.

  • If you go to the Auckland Museum you will see displays about Maori culture. Maori people (or Tangata Whenua, the people of the land, but that's quite a mouthful!) are the indigenous people of New Zealand. Marae are the houses that meetings were and sometimes are still held in by Maori tribes (hapu) and sub-tribes (iwi). It is said that Maori travelled from a place called Hawaiiki to New Zealand (which they call Aotearoa - the land of the long white cloud) by canoes called Waka. These are made of wood, decorated with carvings and Paua shells. There are also Pa. Pa were Maori forts. From memory the Museum has a Pa, marae and Waka for you to see as well as displays of greenstone (like jade) or ponamu (maori name for it) and animal bone jewellry, weapons etc. Oh and feathered cloaks the chiefs wore. Maori rights and Maori land claims are a little bit of a contentious and political issue in New Zealand and some have strong views on either one side of the argument or the other. There have been even peaceful protests over this in the past by Maori. Maori (as you can see by now) initially spoke te reo and used karakia (prayers) and Waiata (songs) and introductions about one's roots (I forget the name of these) in there Powhiri (welcomes). There is a customary giving of a gift, a challenge. A leaf etc. is put down before a person and there is a right way and wrong way to pick it up so if you don't know -- ASK!!! I doubt you'll be offered this, OK!

  • Wellington must be the Drag Queen Capital of the world. Always treat them with respect. They have feelings too, you know.

  • Tipping at restaurants is not common. Don't bother. Wellington hosts a variety of cultures but are all pretty low key. If you're not sure - just ask.

    The Beehive Building
The Beehive Building is one of the Buildings on the Parliament Grounds in Wellington. The old parliament building next door is still in use but was only half completed from the original plan because of World War 2, so they needed a new parliament building, which was finished in 1974
