If you go to the Auckland Museum you will see displays about Maori culture. Maori people (or Tangata Whenua, the people of the land, but that's quite a mouthful!) are the indigenous people of New Zealand. Marae are the houses that meetings were and sometimes are still held in by Maori tribes (hapu) and sub-tribes (iwi). It is said that Maori travelled from a place called Hawaiiki to New Zealand (which they call Aotearoa - the land of the long white cloud) by canoes called Waka. These are made of wood, decorated with carvings and Paua shells. There are also Pa. Pa were Maori forts. From memory the Museum has a Pa, marae and Waka for you to see as well as displays of greenstone (like jade) or ponamu (maori name for it) and animal bone jewellry, weapons etc. Oh and feathered cloaks the chiefs wore.
