Staglands Wildlife Park is located about 17km out of town on the Akatarawa road that links Upper Hutt with Waikanae. It is one of the best wildlife parks in NZ in my view. Lovely setting, and there is a strong conservation element to it as well. It's a great place to have a picnic, relax, look at and feed the animals and birds. Many of the birds are...more
This is a great little place with Steam Train rides, and I am surprised it took me so long to actually come and have a visit. It operates on Sundays between 11am and 4pm as it is run solely by volunteers. It's a great opportunity to take a ride on a steam train and get a feel for how train travel was in times gone by.Adults $12 for unlimited steam...more
I very seldom go to the races as it's not really my thing, but if you are in the Wellington area and are into your horse racing, then by all means check to see if there are races on.Wellington Cup day is of course the big one, but any of the other race days seem to also draw the crowds.more
This cottage was built by the Golder family, one of the first settlers in the area. The family occupied the place up until 1985, and the property was purchased by the Upper Hutt city council in 1987 and restored. It's interesting to wander about the cottage and see how people lived back in the day. It's only open on Saturday afternoons and...more
This is a very popular little place on Main Street, busy with both people dining in and takeaways. It does some good pizza, excellent steaks, and you can wash down your meal with some local craft beer. Portion sizes are generous, and the owner does his best to make you feel at home.Recommended.It does get pretty busy, so reservations are...more
Upper Hutt has no shortage of Indian restaurants, however my meal at Yatra was possibly the best Indian meal I have had in NZ at least, and it was excellent value. The location itself is a little bit unlikely really, not being in the centre of town, but being in a pretty residential area, it is a good option for locals, in my case the restaurant...more
Good coffee and excellent food. The best cafe/bakery in Upper Hutt.Hot cross buns are a specialty there, and their hot cross buns do well in national competitions. Now that I am back in Upper Hutt, it's great to see that nothing has changed and that Buttercup Bakery is as good as ever.UPDATE: April 2013. This cafe seems to have closed. A great...more
This place is pretty good and the service the last time we went there was excellent. Food portions are a good size and good value for money. We had a great meal out.The lunch special for $8 is excellent value, and I totally recommend it.They do both Indian and Malaysian food, although the Indian menu is more extensive than the Malaysian one.more
Upper Hutt has a number of restaurants, but this is the only European option of note, and I thoroughly recommend it.The restaurant is owned by a German, and is authentic with good and well presented food with plenty in the way of volume. All the beer is imported German stuff of a high quality.Greatly enjoyed.more
This place does excellent Thai food, and I've been there numerous times. They have just got their liquor licence which is a bonus. The price is good, and the taste is good. Plenty of variety on the menu as well. Recommended, although I think the owners have rested on their laurels a bit in recent times.more
Little India is a welcome addition to the Upper Hutt dining scene, and offers good quality Indian fare at reasonable prices. Much recommended.Lunch from $11 with rice and naan accompanying a main dish. For dinner for 2 with drinks it cost us around $100 which is not too bad, although possibly a bit on the expensive side for Upper Hutt.more
UH doesn't have much nightlife to speak of, but the Hut is one place to venture to for a few drinks and a game of pool.
Edit Dec 2011
Unless my brother is pulling my leg, this place is now closed for business.
The airport flyer will take you all the way from Wellington airport to Upper Hutt train station for $14.50.It is comfortable and has racks for baggage. Departures are reasonably frequent.See the website for timetables. It takes around 90 minutes and there are limited stops between Upper Hutt and Wellington.Update Nov. 2012, looks like the service...more
This place just out of Upper Hutt is a great place to relax, have a picnic, throw a ball or frisbee about and to do some bushwalking. There are different walks, varying from 1 hour to 4 hours in length. It's at the end of Plateau road off State Highway 2 North of Upper Huttmore
