Upper Hutt Things to Do

  • Cannon Point Walkway

UH has a number of options as far as walking goes, and this is a good one. We simply walked to the top and back again, which took us a good couple of hours with a young one. It's a very pleasant walk with a great view from the top, and also not a bad mountain biking trail as well. We saw a number of runners and mountain bikers in addition to...

  • Staglands

Staglands Wildlife Park is located about 17km out of town on the Akatarawa road that links Upper Hutt with Waikanae. It is one of the best wildlife parks in NZ in my view. Lovely setting, and there is a strong conservation element to it as well. It's a great place to have a picnic, relax, look at and feed the animals and birds. Many of the birds are...

  • Silverstream Railway Museum

This is a great little place with Steam Train rides, and I am surprised it took me so long to actually come and have a visit. It operates on Sundays between 11am and 4pm as it is run solely by volunteers. It's a great opportunity to take a ride on a steam train and get a feel for how train travel was in times gone by.Adults $12 for unlimited steam...

  • Harcourt Park, great for kids

This is quite a sprawling park in the north of Upper Hutt, with plenty of space, and great for kids, with two playground areas, a flying fox, and a wading pool for the kids in summer.Often too various events are held here, and there is a holiday park next door.

  • Horse racing at Trentham

I very seldom go to the races as it's not really my thing, but if you are in the Wellington area and are into your horse racing, then by all means check to see if there are races on.Wellington Cup day is of course the big one, but any of the other race days seem to also draw the crowds.

  • Golders Cottage

This cottage was built by the Golder family, one of the first settlers in the area. The family occupied the place up until 1985, and the property was purchased by the Upper Hutt city council in 1987 and restored. It's interesting to wander about the cottage and see how people lived back in the day. It's only open on Saturday afternoons and...

  • Blueberry Picking

You can go blueberry picking here, or if you have no interest in doing that, you can buy blueberries, or eat blueberry icecream. Not a bad place to stop if you are an icecream fan.

Upper Hutt Restaurants

  • Stonegrill Steak

7 Bar is for the most part a pub, however it does have a restaurant section, and I really enjoyed the stonegrill steaks. It is quite seldom these days that I get out for a drink, however this time my wife and I went out to have a meal there. A decent sized steak can be had for $20 with sides, and drinks are never too expensive. Worth visiting if you...

  • Indian at a good price

I've been here thrice now, and enjoy the food and the reasonable prices.Update Jan 2014, paid this place a visit after quite a few years. The tandoori is as good as ever, and the prices are still reasonable for a mains. Really enjoyed the tandoori platter we had. This place seems to be really good at Tandoori dishes. My favourites are the tandoori...

  • Good pizza and Steak

This is a very popular little place on Main Street, busy with both people dining in and takeaways. It does some good pizza, excellent steaks, and you can wash down your meal with some local craft beer. Portion sizes are generous, and the owner does his best to make you feel at home.Recommended.It does get pretty busy, so reservations are...

  • Top Value Thai

I had an excellent and good value meal at this restaurant. They don't have a liquor licence, so I won't ever go there for an evening meal, but the lunch I had there was fantastic, and good value at $13.50 for a mains.A good option.

  • Great value, great taste

Upper Hutt has no shortage of Indian restaurants, however my meal at Yatra was possibly the best Indian meal I have had in NZ at least, and it was excellent value. The location itself is a little bit unlikely really, not being in the centre of town, but being in a pretty residential area, it is a good option for locals, in my case the restaurant...

  • Awesome coffee and bakery

Good coffee and excellent food. The best cafe/bakery in Upper Hutt.Hot cross buns are a specialty there, and their hot cross buns do well in national competitions. Now that I am back in Upper Hutt, it's great to see that nothing has changed and that Buttercup Bakery is as good as ever.UPDATE: April 2013. This cafe seems to have closed. A great...

  • Good Indian at Broadway

This restaurant is about 1km from the city centre, and is very close to the Hawk's Inn Motel so a good option for people staying there. It's a smallish family run restaurant with good, reasonably priced food and drinks. Not a bad option and they do takeaways as well.

  • Indian/Malaysian cuisine

This place is pretty good and the service the last time we went there was excellent. Food portions are a good size and good value for money. We had a great meal out.The lunch special for $8 is excellent value, and I totally recommend it.They do both Indian and Malaysian food, although the Indian menu is more extensive than the Malaysian one.

  • Great German in UH

Upper Hutt has a number of restaurants, but this is the only European option of note, and I thoroughly recommend it.The restaurant is owned by a German, and is authentic with good and well presented food with plenty in the way of volume. All the beer is imported German stuff of a high quality.Greatly enjoyed.

  • Excellent Thai cuisine

This place does excellent Thai food, and I've been there numerous times. They have just got their liquor licence which is a bonus. The price is good, and the taste is good. Plenty of variety on the menu as well. Recommended, although I think the owners have rested on their laurels a bit in recent times.

  • More Indian

Little India is a welcome addition to the Upper Hutt dining scene, and offers good quality Indian fare at reasonable prices. Much recommended.Lunch from $11 with rice and naan accompanying a main dish. For dinner for 2 with drinks it cost us around $100 which is not too bad, although possibly a bit on the expensive side for Upper Hutt.

  • Silverstream Chinese Restaurant

Not too bad allround, with good food in good quantities. The service itself was a bit all over the place, but I went home full, having had a good meal.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

UH doesn't have much nightlife to speak of, but the Hut is one place to venture to for a few drinks and a game of pool.

    Edit Dec 2011
Unless my brother is pulling my leg, this place is now closed for business.

Upper Hutt Shopping

Upper Hutt has its own craft brewery, and it is quite easy to buy this particular beer in UH.

I have tried most of the varieties and like them all, although I don't drink them that often as they are a bit more expensive than the sort of stuff you can buy in the supermarket.

In any case, worth a try if you are in UH, and their beers are available in a number of places, one I like in particular is the Art of Pizza Restaurant where you can enjoy a jug or two with some excellent pizza.

Those who want to know what a Kereru is, here is the link Wikipedia article on the Kereru

What to buy: The Hop to it is probably my favourite

What to pay: Around $5 for a 330ml bottle and $8 for a 500 ml bottle

Upper Hutt Off The Beaten Path

  • Kaitoke Regional Park

This park is yet another nice place to get away to, have a picnic and do some good, if not too strenous bushwalking.Lord of the Rings fans will also be interested in this area, as it is one of the places that was used to shoot the movie Lord of the Rings.

I must admit it has been a while since I have last played, but UH does have some decent and reasonably priced golf courses.

As far as pricing goes, Trentham Camp Golf Club is the most reasonable, with Te Marua being the medium priced one, and Royal Wellington being the most expensive
