 | Wellington Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 110 | | One Red Dog is listed as a pizza restaurant and it, in my experience, delivers some of the best. Located off Wellington's Courtenay Place in Blair St, ORD is very popular so get there early. There are tables in prime locations by the window and many others dotted around catering for different group sizes. Another feature of ORD is its home brewed beers. They allow you to do a tasting to see which one you like best then it's "2nd star to the right and straight on 'til morning......" Being right by Courtenay Place you are close to the action if you decide that you want to kick on and go to some clubs etc.
The pizza is why you come here. There are heaps of variations with a medium size at $18 and large at $26. You can go half & half if you and your partner are not sure which one to settle on. First off I love the paua shell ashtrays that you collect for yourself in the bin by the fishpond by the door. Really know you are back in NZ when you see the good old paua shell ashtrays. Second off I love their menu. You can get peanut butter milkshakes or you can be traditional and go for the blue heaven flavour. You can get a tofu burger (vegetarian or vegan) or you can get a burger burger. They also have a sign saying - Soupz we have gotz! - so someone is a LOLcat fan I think. Third off I love their music. The staff are cheerful and helpful and young and eclectically dressed and are not a bit browbeaten into fakey fake behaviour. So they play the kind of music they want to hear. And, so far, it has been just great. I bet this is the kind of place that if I really didn't like the music I could tell them and they would change it. Fourth off I love their collection of orange vacuum flasks. The coffee is okay too. My only quibble is the coffee and milkshakes are all served in takeway cartons. Maybe they can't decide who should do the washing up. I had had a bit of a fright on the zebra crossing in Constable Street - taxi behind the car that stopped for me neglected to notice this and rear ended the polite car. I had leapt up in the air like a gazelle and shouted Farrkkkkk! (now why did I think Up was a good idea?) and I could see polite guy wondering why I was doing this. And then he found out. Anyway, I needed a coffee so this place was the handiest. The cheap and cheerful pizza and coffee place was full of cheerful Mediterranean familes. And there was Italian gelato (Made on the Premises) that looked like it would hit the spot on a day that wasn't quite so bleak and wet. (I will return.) I particularly like the Italian pop music. As I calmed my nerves I could hear guy singing with all his heart - "Sono qui." (I am here.) But it was the warehouse behind that was the find. If you have got to have prosecco or limoncello, or you are craving panettone (hard to imagine that, craving panettone) or you require prosciutto di Parma or Emiliano, or bocconcini or whatever - this is your place.
Will report back re gelato. REPORTING BACK RE GELATO - It was very good but way way way too expensive. Maybe girl who served me decided to give me an ungenerous tiny minute small kiddie portion - but I have never paid such a price for an icecream before and don't intend to go back and find out if that is the usual size. This restaurant is located so superbly - right on the water at Greta Point with a view of planes taking off and landing at Rongotai Airport - that I could have forgiven quite a lot. As it was there was really nothing to forgive. I even liked the adventure of not being sure where it was. Bit of a cunning lark that. It was obviously a boat house and blocks of town houses have been built in front of it. There is a sign on the gate to that complex - Private. Residents Only. If one walks on a little one sees a big neon sign SOI. And a dark and rickety wooden staircase down to a stretch of pebble beach and then stairs up to a pier. But do not get to it that way unless you are up for an adventure. Just push open the gate that says - Private. Residents Only. And a very short walk round the corner. Honestly you think they would put out a sign on the pavement with a big arrow. Anyway, the ambience is super chic, the view to die for, the staff attentive yet discreet, and the food fresh and appetising. Quibbles. The music was too loud for good conversation. This is one of those barely decorated places with wooden floors that echo. Just too loud. And the lights just a little too low for old people who need to see well to be able to hear. The food was just a morsel plain and the servings stingy. Just a morsel. In my opinion. You could get away with not ordering extras like side salad etc - there was just enough veg on the plate for you to feel you had had your greens - but one is paying for the decor I know. They seem to stay open all the hours the good Lord sends and offer lunch etc and actually I think I would prefer lunch, especially if the weather was good enough to sit outside.
My pan fried fish with salsa verde and potato cakes cost $23 and was worth it. But it was just a little on the dull side. My dessert of Lemon Affrogato cost $10-50 and was a very small scoop of very plain icecream in a wine glass with a shot of cold strong coffee in a little cup and a shot glass of inferior limoncello. Not the taste treat I had hoped for. But the shot of coffee sure got me up and going - for hours! We went again and I liked this place less. The servings are just too stingy and the menu hasn't enough variety. MY BIL arrived very late because he couldn't find it. It is closer to Kilbirnie than anywhere else.

Perfectly agreeable cafe - normal sort of prices and range of tucker - BUT it is situated in the Lady Norwood Rose Garden in the Botanic Gardens - so on a beautiful day (Wellington does have the odd beautiful day - true!) there is nowhere more beautiful or peaceful to have your coffee and excellent cheese scone. Or your pasta or soup or sandwich. There is a sign suggesting you do not feed the birds BUT they do not need you to feed them but send shock troops in all the time so if you look away for a moment it is a Kthnxbye sort of situation as your scone vanishes. My mum and I started to laugh at the whole range of food appropriating behaviours. From frank and outright begging and fading away in front of your eyes dying from hunger what a big meanie you are TO red alert all together now we distract and conquer! And the rose gardens stretch out around you and the bush clad hills loom. Just gorgeous. More about the Botanic Gardens on Things To Do. BTW you can get to them on the Cable Car.

Based in Dukes Archade between Manners St and Willis st, Iona is a great place for a coffee. The people running this place used to run Cafe Neo and they are the reason why it was so successful. Service is lightening quick and the selection of food is quite good. The shop being inside doesn't have any street views which is a bit of a negative but the seating is well set up so no real problems. Prices are good and the coffee is very good.
I like a mocca and bacon & egg sandwich for my morning tea. First thing it's a short espresso (ristretto). At breakfast time the Muesli & fruit is a great option and at $8.50 it's also fairly cheap. D'oh! Why didn't I go here yesterday, instead of wasting my money at the Eastern Sunrise (see above). Same price and ten times better food and the ambience... Nice wooden interior. You can choose to sit at the counter, at a table or traditionally Japanese. Nice lighting. Contemporary Jazz music, not too loud, just right. When you enter, the whole staff (3 waiters and 5 cooks behind the counter) greets you in Japanese, and the say goodbye to you when you leave. Friendly waiters, always coming to your table and asking if there's anything else I want. Smiling... What a difference to my Eastern Sunrise Cafeteria (I even had to downgrade yesterday's rating on that one).
Starters: Japanese fishcake (fried, 8 wedges, served with grated radish), NZ$6 Main: Tofu steak (fried, 3 cubes, with spring onion, fried onion, shiitake mushroom* and bean sprouts in a sweet soy sauce on a hot platter), NZ$10 Dessert: Sesame ice cream (4 scoops), NZ$4 * I asked the waiter for shiitake, but what I got were ordinary mushrooms... This seafood restaurant is located in Oriental Bay right on the water. They have a menu that includes a salad bar for less than $10 US.!The food was good but by far the best thing about the restuarant was the VIEW ! We sat inside because of the rain but they also have a deck right over the water which would have been awesome had the weather been better. Oh well, there is always next time ! Leave a Comment

The Lone Star in Wellington is part of a chain of same named places in NZ serving big meals of good quality. The Wellington version is no exception though the meals are certainly no where near as large as their counterparts in Christchurch. The restaurant is located on Tory Street, not far from Courtenay Place and has a bar area and seating for groups of up to 12 people. The service is quick and staff friendly. The menu covers most meats plus fish and an occassional vegetarian dish.
I had a large Sirloin steak and Angie had a small Dixie Chicken (normally comes with two breasts but you can get it with just one if you are not a big eater). The cost was $29 for the steak and $21 for the chicken. Both were really nice. Leave a Comment

This place is under the old BNZ and is a Hare Krishna restaurant. The food is all vege or vegan and the selection is good. Food is in a buffet style set-up and you pick the plate size you want (the charge is by plate size) and fill it up. Plates are sort of small, medium & large with the price $7.50 for small, $9.50 medium & $12.50 for the large. You can pile a LOT of food onto a small plate so go for a smaller plate and load it up. The music being played was typically that sort you might associate with Hare Krishna.
The food was all good with rice & curries & spuds & all sorts of salads. You could also buy bean curd for an extra $1. They also have juices, herbal teas, Paneer & Vegetarian Yoghurt.
