This place is under the old BNZ and is a Hare Krishna restaurant. The food is all vege or vegan and the selection is good. Food is in a buffet style set-up and you pick the plate size you want (the charge is by plate size) and fill it up.

Plates are sort of small, medium & large with the price $7.50 for small, $9.50 medium & $12.50 for the large. You can pile a LOT of food onto a small plate so go for a smaller plate and load it up.

The music being played was typically that sort you might associate with Hare Krishna.

The food was all good with rice & curries & spuds & all sorts of salads. You could also buy bean curd for an extra $1. They also have juices, herbal teas, Paneer & Vegetarian Yoghurt.

    Big Thumb: Good Chinese Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Big Thumb is located on Allen St, just off Courtenay Place. I went here for dinner with a work mate (Bubba) and we were both quite happy with our food. We each got soup and a main and had a drink each with a total cost of $62 which is quite reasonable.

The restaurant is reasonably big with really cool old style carved tables - the bigger ones including a lazy susan for groups who like to share.

The service was quick and the staff really friendly. Being a Monday night the restaurant was on the quiet side so we had no problem getting a table.

I had chicken & sweet corn soup and it was nice. My main was beef, mushroom & cashew nuts and it was really good. Bubba had Won Ton soup and Garlic Chilli Chicken (I tried some of the chicken and it was great).

I had had a bit of a fright on the zebra crossing in Constable Street - taxi behind the car that stopped for me neglected to notice this and rear ended the polite car. I had leapt up in the air like a gazelle and shouted Farrkkkkk! (now why did I think Up was a good idea?) and I could see polite guy wondering why I was doing this. And then he found out.

Anyway, I needed a coffee so this place was the handiest.

The cheap and cheerful pizza and coffee place was full of cheerful Mediterranean familes. And there was Italian gelato (Made on the Premises) that looked like it would hit the spot on a day that wasn't quite so bleak and wet. (I will return.)

I particularly like the Italian pop music. As I calmed my nerves I could hear guy singing with all his heart - "Sono qui." (I am here.)

But it was the warehouse behind that was the find. If you have got to have prosecco or limoncello, or you are craving panettone (hard to imagine that, craving panettone) or you require prosciutto di Parma or Emiliano, or bocconcini or whatever - this is your place.

    Will report back re gelato.

This restaurant is located so superbly - right on the water at Greta Point with a view of planes taking off and landing at Rongotai Airport - that I could have forgiven quite a lot.
As it was there was really nothing to forgive.
I even liked the adventure of not being sure where it was. Bit of a cunning lark that. It was obviously a boat house and blocks of town houses have been built in front of it. There is a sign on the gate to that complex - Private. Residents Only.
If one walks on a little one sees a big neon sign SOI. And a dark and rickety wooden staircase down to a stretch of pebble beach and then stairs up to a pier.
But do not get to it that way unless you are up for an adventure.
Just push open the gate that says - Private. Residents Only. And a very short walk round the corner.
Honestly you think they would put out a sign on the pavement with a big arrow.
Anyway, the ambience is super chic, the view to die for, the staff attentive yet discreet, and the food fresh and appetising.
    Quibbles.
The music was too loud for good conversation. This is one of those barely decorated places with wooden floors that echo. Just too loud. And the lights just a little too low for old people who need to see well to be able to hear.
The food was just a morsel plain and the servings stingy. Just a morsel. In my opinion.
You could get away with not ordering extras like side salad etc - there was just enough veg on the plate for you to feel you had had your greens - but one is paying for the decor I know.

They seem to stay open all the hours the good Lord sends and offer lunch etc and actually I think I would prefer lunch, especially if the weather was good enough to sit outside.

My pan fried fish with salsa verde and potato cakes cost $23 and was worth it. But it was just a little on the dull side.
My dessert of Lemon Affrogato cost $10-50 and was a very small scoop of very plain icecream in a wine glass with a shot of cold strong coffee in a little cup and a shot glass of inferior limoncello. Not the taste treat I had hoped for. But the shot of coffee sure got me up and going - for hours!

We went again and I liked this place less. The servings are just too stingy and the menu hasn't enough variety. MY BIL arrived very late because he couldn't find it.

Satay Village: Magnificent Malaysian meals on the cheap
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Firstly, dont be put off by the looks of the place, also dont be put off by the review in the window from 1997 (its a good review though). The restraunt is TINY (so if you are eating in RING AND BOOK A TABLE, you may be disapointed) and its main trade is takeaway meals with a few tables on the side. There is a waiter service however if you do not like being in a closed space with other people it may pay just to order the takeaway meal and eat it at the hostel/hotel. It is a busy resaurant which adds to its appeal, you can always hear something going on.
the food quality is fantastic and the service is second to none...and CHEAP! all meals are are around £4 or under (NZ$12 or less)

The best Beef Rendang in Wellington by far (and probably the cheapest) but almost every dish on their menu must be enjoyed.

Two dishes that can be avoided simple called. 'Beef Curry' & 'Chicken Curry'. They are edible but they are certainly nothing special at all.

Perfectly agreeable cafe - normal sort of prices and range of tucker - BUT it is situated in the Lady Norwood Rose Garden in the Botanic Gardens - so on a beautiful day (Wellington does have the odd beautiful day - true!) there is nowhere more beautiful or peaceful to have your coffee and excellent cheese scone. Or your pasta or soup or sandwich.
There is a sign suggesting you do not feed the birds BUT they do not need you to feed them but send shock troops in all the time so if you look away for a moment it is a Kthnxbye sort of situation as your scone vanishes. My mum and I started to laugh at the whole range of food appropriating behaviours. From frank and outright begging and fading away in front of your eyes dying from hunger what a big meanie you are TO red alert all together now we distract and conquer!
And the rose gardens stretch out around you and the bush clad hills loom. Just gorgeous.
More about the Botanic Gardens on Things To Do.
BTW you can get to them on the Cable Car.

My brother tells me that the Island Bay sausages are famous.

    Coyote Restaurant: Coyote Restaurant

  • I've labled this place as a steakhouse but the menu is much more varied. The restaurant doubles as a nightspot with resident DJ starting up at around 10pm. There is a fully set-up bar with a good wine selection and many varieties of beer. Service is efficient and you don't need to make a booking. There is outside seating which is ideal on a nice summer evening.

I come here for the Jack's Back 650gm steak. Big, juicy & just the ticket after a long day in the office. Priced at $36 it is not a meal for the budget conscious but there are plenty of other options including a chicken burger at $16.

    Plum: Plum

  • Plum is a great spot to stop for a coffee on Wellington's busy Cuba St Mall. Having both indoor & outdoor seating you have the choice of sitting in the sun (if it's out) or relaxing inside the cafe.

Service here is fast & there is a good range of coffees and eats.

The coffee here is very good (as with most Wellington cafes) - probably one of the better Wellington cafes.

Trisha's Pies: Best Pies in Town
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Trisha's Pies is one out of the box in Wellington serving a vast array of the humble pie. They come in a large number of flavours and have two sizes - regular and extra large!! The shop has been in business for quite some time and given the large amount of product on display there is quite a bit of pie volume being sold out of here.

My pie of choice is the extra large steak and mushroom. At $6.95 it is not cheap however it's huge and keeps me on my feet for hours at a time.

This restaurant has a perfect location - situated at the waterfront of Oriental Bay, only a short distance to Wellingtons city center, it has a splendid view of the bay and the harbour district.

The restaurant is very popular among both locals and tourists. So it is highly recommended to reserve a table in advance.

    Service and quality were excellent.

Try their seafood dishes, but they also serve a good sirloin steak.
