This restaurant has a perfect location - situated at the waterfront of Oriental Bay, only a short distance to Wellingtons city center, it has a splendid view of the bay and the harbour district.
The restaurant is very popular among both locals and tourists. So it is highly recommended to reserve a table in advance.
Service and quality were excellent.
Favorite Dish:
Try their seafood dishes, but they also serve a good sirloin steak.
We went there for the spectacular location on Oriental Bay. Fishermans Table sits right in the harbour, the waves splashing against the base of the deck where you can sit in nice weather conditions. The building is round on the seaside. It is a former band rotunda, and was transformed into a restaurant in 2003.
We went there without booking and got a great table right on the seaside side after waiting at the bar for about two or three minutes, and enjoyed the fantastic night views of the cityscape. Even if you are sitting in the second row you have the views, as those tables are on a higher level.
Having read the menus and especially the prices of other restaurants on Oriental Parade, I could not believe they advertised meals from NZ$ 12.50. I thought that was attracting customers under false pretense into the restaurant, and you would pay NZ$ 12.50 for a slice of garlic bread. But for that money you get scallops as a starter or a vegetable lasagne for lunch! A loaf of hot bread for two costs $ 4.20, and a garlic loaf $ 2.20!
I had a regular seafood chowder as a starter (7.60), and the fresh fish did not cost more than $ 18 as a main. Mains come with chips, croquettes or half and half. For $ 3.80 you can help yourself from the salad and vegetable buffet (they call it “the boat”).
Everything was delicious and great value for money. We did not order desserts, only coffee, but they looked great and were very reasonably priced betwenn $ 7 and 8.
Staff were friendly, and service was fast.
Open daily 11.30am – 9pm
They have a second fantastically located restaurant in Paekakariki on the Kapiti Coast.
Update 24 August 2008
On our recent visit I was not overly impressed with my food. I had Seafood Basket - crumbed seafood - with half and half (croquette and chips). The seafood was ok but not exciting, the chips were undercooked. I highly recommend the side salad from the Boat (buffet). Costs just $ 3.80, and you can eat as much as you please. Service very friendly and fast.
The staff were awesome and friendly
The food was totally fantastic
Everyone there went out of their way to make sure all patrons were happy
Even the matree de waited and cleaned tables.
Favorite Dish:
The seafood platter
Before they open up this restaurant in the city, we used to drive about an hour to Paekakariki just to dine there. Like their sister restaurant with magnificant views of the Tasman Sea & Kapiti Island, the city restaurant has a superb views of Wellington harbour & city while you enjoy your meal. On a good & warm day, you can have your meal on the deck.
It is also a very children friendly restaurant with meals @ NZD$6. For the rest of us, there's is bargain meal (13 different options to choose from) - a light meal (smaller portion of the mains) with unlimited salad from the salad bar for only NZD$13.95. Do help yourself @ the "salad boat" before your meal arrives, but don't over eat... else you won't be able to enjoy your main!
There are also vegetarian & non seafood dishes, eg. steaks, chicken & pork, available for non seafood lovers who are just happen to be here with friends / families.
Open daily from 11:30 am to last orders @ 9pm.
Now, I am allergic to seafood so there was little point of me going to this restaurant...however being in a group of friends who all love seafood I never want to be the sour puss and tell them where they can and can not eat just because it may be fatal for me.
Fisherman’s Table is a family restaurant with a smoking section at the bar. (yes, it has a bar at slight inflated prices, although you can BYO). There isn't much I can really say about it because I couldn't eat 95% of the menu. I can say that the chicken was average and overpriced and the steak was overcooked and WELL overpriced. The salads were excellent however. My friends told me that the fish was lovely and enjoyed it so much; they went back again the next day for lunch, without me. The main attraction to this restaurant is the view. It is absolutely stunning especially at dusk/night time. It is built on the old swimming baths on Port Nicholson and has a panoramic view over the harbour and to the city. When that sun sets you forget you are in a small city in a small country and the night view of the Wellington skyscrapers almost stops conversation. Its that good! By the way the seafood is a lot cheaper than non seafood dishes
Most of the staff were good, however one dropped a seafood chowder on someones lap on the table next door...and the waiter blamed the customer....hopefully that was a once off
Favorite Dish:
The food was OK. I suppose the steak was good, only because I like steak and I cant eat seafood.
the salad boat is excellent and its all you can eat.
