This seafood restaurant is located in Oriental Bay right on the water. They have a menu that includes a salad bar for less than $10 US.!The food was good but by far the best thing about the restuarant was the VIEW ! We sat inside because of the rain but they also have a deck right over the water which would have been awesome had the weather been better. Oh well, there is always next time !

    Kazu: Exquisite Japanse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • D'oh! Why didn't I go here yesterday, instead of wasting my money at the Eastern Sunrise (see above). Same price and ten times better food and the ambience... Nice wooden interior. You can choose to sit at the counter, at a table or traditionally Japanese. Nice lighting. Contemporary Jazz music, not too loud, just right. When you enter, the whole staff (3 waiters and 5 cooks behind the counter) greets you in Japanese, and the say goodbye to you when you leave. Friendly waiters, always coming to your table and asking if there's anything else I want. Smiling... What a difference to my Eastern Sunrise Cafeteria (I even had to downgrade yesterday's rating on that one).

Starters: Japanese fishcake (fried, 8 wedges, served with grated radish), NZ$6 Main: Tofu steak (fried, 3 cubes, with spring onion, fried onion, shiitake mushroom* and bean sprouts in a sweet soy sauce on a hot platter), NZ$10 Dessert: Sesame ice cream (4 scoops), NZ$4 * I asked the waiter for shiitake, but what I got were ordinary mushrooms...

    One Red Dog: Pizza Haven
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One Red Dog is listed as a pizza restaurant and it, in my experience, delivers some of the best. Located off Wellington's Courtenay Place in Blair St, ORD is very popular so get there early. There are tables in prime locations by the window and many others dotted around catering for different group sizes. Another feature of ORD is its home brewed beers. They allow you to do a tasting to see which one you like best then it's "2nd star to the right and straight on 'til morning......" Being right by Courtenay Place you are close to the action if you decide that you want to kick on and go to some clubs etc.

The pizza is why you come here. There are heaps of variations with a medium size at $18 and large at $26. You can go half & half if you and your partner are not sure which one to settle on.

The Chocolate Fish: Eat Fish Made of Chocolate
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Chocolate Fish, likely the most photographed and beloved cafe in all of Wellington, is known to Wellingtonians as a beautiful place to eat beautiful food with beautiful (and likely wealthy) people. Set 8 km from the city centre, the Fish lays home on one of Wellington's finest beaches. You can sit in the restaurant or its veranda, or you can cross the street and sit on the small boardwalk where waiters and waitresses will bring your food, careful to dodge passing cars. To get to the Fish just follow the coast - drive around the Mirimar Peninsula, through the Shelly Bay Airforce base (beautiful views of the harbour and city) and out of the blue you come to the Chocolate Fish. Or head to the airport, turn left at Seatoun, down Broadway, through the Seatoun tunnel and left at the beach - 5 minute drive (some pretty nice houses to look at on the way). Also, if you ask if Janine is working, tell her you know of me and you might get a special deal. :) (No probably not, but she is one of my closest friends.)

The Fish specializes in all day breakfast, and I must admit I am a huge fan. Semolina and gingered fruit compote, bircher muesli, fruit and yoghurt; scrambled eggs and smoked salmon with hollandaise; kidneys, mushroom and bacon are a few of the things advertised on the webpage, and I will say they are all very good. But the food is not sophisticated, you know what you like, and everything there is worth a try. You might also be dining next to a famous artist or rugby player, as they frequent the cafe.

Ma's and Pa's is a small and cleaverly rusted coffeehouse set just next to Makara Beach. Decored with old fishing paddle boats and a small home-made living room for reading and drinking tea, Ma's and Pa's is one of my more favorite non-modern cafes in the world. You can visit through the week and have the whole place to yourself, or go on the weekends to be with the crowd of teens, early adults and elderly that frequent this all ages hotspot. To view more Makara Beach photos, click here.

Buy any coffee or tea, but don't forget to purchase and eat one of their home made muffins. They are very good and quite filled with a select number of fruits.

I had noticed this restaurant on my way back to my hostel from Te Papa the other night, and not seeing any whites in there, I concluded that it had to be popular with the local Chinese/Asian, and thus pretty authentic. Friendly staff, but cheap-looking, cafeteria-style interior.

Starter: Fried Bean Curd Rolls with Duck Meat, NZ$5.50 Main dish: Hot and Spicy Spare Ribs, NZ$ 15 Dessert (incl.): A couple of apple slices and orange wedges

Just a short walk from our B&B was an excellent restaurant,The White House. It was recommended to us by our "Kiwi Son" Daniel. The W.H. specializes in fine NZ wine & modern NZ fare with an Asian flair, using fresh seafood & organically grown NZ produce.Everything we ordered was delicious & beautifully presented, especially the three amazing desserts we shared : P The restaurant got it's name because it was orginally located in a small 'White House' on Willis Street, no relation to the big White House on Pennsylvania Street ; ) Since 1999 The White House Restaurant is located in a bigger and better location, right on the Oriental Parade. We sat in a small upstairs dining room which was very intimate and private. While filming Lord of the Rings, movie star Liv Tyler (Arwen) quietly dined here often, nibbling on organic veggie dishes & enjoying her privacy. The White House also has larger rooms for groups & tables with fantastic views of the Harbour at Oreintal Bay.So there is sonething for everyone ! Cheers Daniel (kiwi_dan1975) your recommendation of this fine restaurant was right on !

Satay Village: Magnificent Malaysian meals on the cheap
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Firstly, dont be put off by the looks of the place, also dont be put off by the review in the window from 1997 (its a good review though). The restraunt is TINY (so if you are eating in RING AND BOOK A TABLE, you may be disapointed) and its main trade is takeaway meals with a few tables on the side. There is a waiter service however if you do not like being in a closed space with other people it may pay just to order the takeaway meal and eat it at the hostel/hotel. It is a busy resaurant which adds to its appeal, you can always hear something going on. the food quality is fantastic and the service is second to none...and CHEAP! all meals are are around £4 or under (NZ$12 or less)

The best Beef Rendang in Wellington by far (and probably the cheapest) but almost every dish on their menu must be enjoyed. Two dishes that can be avoided simple called. 'Beef Curry' & 'Chicken Curry'. They are edible but they are certainly nothing special at all.

    Lone Star: Lone Star
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Lone Star in Wellington is part of a chain of same named places in NZ serving big meals of good quality. The Wellington version is no exception though the meals are certainly no where near as large as their counterparts in Christchurch. The restaurant is located on Tory Street, not far from Courtenay Place and has a bar area and seating for groups of up to 12 people. The service is quick and staff friendly. The menu covers most meats plus fish and an occassional vegetarian dish.

I had a large Sirloin steak and Angie had a small Dixie Chicken (normally comes with two breasts but you can get it with just one if you are not a big eater). The cost was $29 for the steak and $21 for the chicken. Both were really nice.

This restaurant has a perfect location - situated at the waterfront of Oriental Bay, only a short distance to Wellingtons city center, it has a splendid view of the bay and the harbour district. The restaurant is very popular among both locals and tourists. So it is highly recommended to reserve a table in advance. Service and quality were excellent.

Try their seafood dishes, but they also serve a good sirloin steak.
