Te Papa Museum situated on Wellington's prestine waterfront was home to the Lord of the Rings exhibition and a lot of very other interesting exhibits. Te Papa is worth a visit, just to say you have been there, there are some interesting information about earthquakes and dinosaurs to name a few, but a lot of Te Papa has a look and touch kind of setup, lots of bottons and knobs to press and flashy lights. The stay-in exhibits are interesting to view and read information about, but the main attractions can be the short-term exhibits such as Lord of the Rings which ended earlier this year. You pay for such exhibits and some of the rides. General entrance is free, but there are donation boxes if your feeling generous. It will take a good day to view all levels of exhibits dont be fooled and try and rush everything in afternoon. You will find something really interesting and just as you get into the story you have to go. There are a number of cafes and restaurants in Te Papa on every level, so you can stop half way for a snack, lunch or dinner. Also there are shops in Te Papa so you can purchase an everylasting momento of Te Papa. Te Papa is open everyday of the year inlcuding Xmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. 10am - 6pm and Thursdays 10am - 9pm. | | | | Te Papa National Museum: Te Papa National Museum of New Zealand | Tip Rating: | | | | |
This is a great museum and a good place to take kids. You will learn almost everything there is to know about New Zealand, its history, and culture, from the very beginning to the present. You will see an exhibit about New Zealand's natural forces, including earthquakes, volcanoes, and plants and animals. Bush City is an outdoor exhibit that recreates New Zealand's natural habitats. A great exhibit is dedicated to the Maori culture, and other exhibits include the history of immigration to New Zealand, the significance of sheep to the country, and an art gallery. There is also a space for temporary exhibits that change frequently. When I was there, it was an exhibit about fashion dedicated to Gianni Versace. Some of these exhibits may charge for admission. In addition to the museum, there is a gift shop and some restaurants. Te Papa is open every day from 10 AM to 6 PM and on Thursays until 9 PM. Admission is FREE, so don't pass this up.
