Te Papa National Museum: LOTR Exhibit
  • Tip Rating:
  • I could have spent so much more time in the Te Papa Museum. I enjoyed the New Zealand historical displays a lot ,but the main reason for our visit was to see the Lord of The Rings (LOTR) Exhibit . I had already seen a few LOTR costumes in a Museum in Hollywood, displaying lots of movie costumes nominated for Academy Awards. And during the tour in Hollywood , the Museum Curator explained how glad he was that LOTR won for Best Costume. He said it was by far the best and really deserved to win (unlike some other previous winners). At Te Papa I missed not having an expert guide, but it's displays of LOTR costumes, armour and models were much more extensive. It also had film clips, interactives, and interviews with cast and crew and special effects experts. But what I like the most about the exibit at Te Papa is that it's located in "Middle Earth" ! UPDATE: The LOTR Exibit came & went since I wrote this tip. But Good News, by popular demand it's returning soon and will be expanded to include new exhibits from the trilogy.

    Te Papa National Museum: Wow...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I am not very fond of museums normally, but this is a MUST SEE! I can says this because I went back 4 times. Ok, honestly, I must admit that since it was raining most of the time I was in Wellington I had to find a place where I could be indoors for a long period of time without costing me any money. Te Papa served that purpose very well. After 4 days I still had not seen it all, albeit I'm pretty sure I managed to visit all the corners and alleys in this giant building. It has something for every taste, natural history, arts, Maori and Pakeha culture...I did not have a boring moment.

Te Papa National Museum: Visit New Zealand's Favorite Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand, means Our Place and rightfully so. Perhaps one of the most useful and interesting museums I've visted, Te Papa gives visitors a view of New Zealand's young history and the story of it's future. As you enter the massively beautiful building, you view a large round globe suspended by pressured water. Perhaps it signifies the power of New Zealand and the effects the ocean has on the great country. Continuing up the stairs you find areas of dinosaurs and geographical weather systems and how they shaped the country. Also present now in the museum is the Lord of the Rings, and there is a gift shop directly reflecting this. Also in Te Papa is a powerful and large Maori culture area. You will find quite a bit of information regarding this side of history and will see some of the most beautiful works of art dealing with the people. Te Papa is free to enter but donations are accepted. The gift shops are selling more than just junk and I recommend a ciew of these. Entertain yourself and your partners with a Maori gathering on certain days or just relax by yourself and peruse the exhibits in quiet.

Te Papa National Museum: Te Papa Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Te Papa Museum situated on Wellington's prestine waterfront was home to the Lord of the Rings exhibition and a lot of very other interesting exhibits. Te Papa is worth a visit, just to say you have been there, there are some interesting information about earthquakes and dinosaurs to name a few, but a lot of Te Papa has a look and touch kind of setup, lots of bottons and knobs to press and flashy lights. The stay-in exhibits are interesting to view and read information about, but the main attractions can be the short-term exhibits such as Lord of the Rings which ended earlier this year. You pay for such exhibits and some of the rides. General entrance is free, but there are donation boxes if your feeling generous. It will take a good day to view all levels of exhibits dont be fooled and try and rush everything in afternoon. You will find something really interesting and just as you get into the story you have to go. There are a number of cafes and restaurants in Te Papa on every level, so you can stop half way for a snack, lunch or dinner. Also there are shops in Te Papa so you can purchase an everylasting momento of Te Papa. Te Papa is open everyday of the year inlcuding Xmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. 10am - 6pm and Thursdays 10am - 9pm.

Te Papa National Museum: Te Papa - the National Museum.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Te Papa is the National Museum. It is a huge building on Wellington's waterfront. There is a variety of exhibits, but some of them are very whizz-bang, bright lights, low on info, circus type things. It is a good place to take the kids. It lacks the austerity of a British Museum or even Auckland's venerable War Memorial Museum, but it's a fun day out. Special exhibitions are probably the most interesting things, but you pay to see those. General admittance is free, but the "rides" cost.

Te Papa National Museum: Te Papa National Museum of New Zealand
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a great museum and a good place to take kids. You will learn almost everything there is to know about New Zealand, its history, and culture, from the very beginning to the present. You will see an exhibit about New Zealand's natural forces, including earthquakes, volcanoes, and plants and animals. Bush City is an outdoor exhibit that recreates New Zealand's natural habitats. A great exhibit is dedicated to the Maori culture, and other exhibits include the history of immigration to New Zealand, the significance of sheep to the country, and an art gallery. There is also a space for temporary exhibits that change frequently. When I was there, it was an exhibit about fashion dedicated to Gianni Versace. Some of these exhibits may charge for admission. In addition to the museum, there is a gift shop and some restaurants. Te Papa is open every day from 10 AM to 6 PM and on Thursays until 9 PM. Admission is FREE, so don't pass this up.

Te Papa National Museum: History galore
  • Tip Rating:
  • New Zealand's geology and natural environment comes to life in Awesome Forces, Mountains to Sea and Bush City. The stories of New Zealand's indigenous people, the Mäori, are celebrated in Mana Whenua, which features many beautiful taonga (treasures). Te Marae offers the chance to experience a unique and beautiful contemporary marae (meeting house) designed and created by leading Mäori carvers. You’ll also discover an exciting and diverse range of changing exhibitions displaying New Zealand’s diverse art and visual culture with Te Papa also regularly featuring a range of international touring exhibitions. It even teaches New Zealanders about their past ancestors. Its a real must see to get the full picture of New Zealand

Te Papa National Museum: Te Papa Tongarewa Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • A very exciting, 21st century interactive museum, where you can learn about the Maori heritage and culture of New Zealand, about the immigrants who have made the country what it is today, you can go back and forward in time, try virtual bungee jumping and sheep shearing....It's a fun place.
