By Air : Wellington International Airport is one of the three largest in New Zealand and is about 8kms south east of the city centre. It’s a freaky landing as you fly in over the water to the edge of the runway. There are direct flights to Wellington from Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and other major cities and towns. International flights by Qantas and Air New Zealand also fly direct to Wellington. By Car : Wellington is 660kms south of Auckland and should take about 8 hours by road.. From the South Island, the ferry from Picton to Wellington should take about 3 hours 20 minutes. By Taxis : Combined Taxi’s has the largest fleet in Wellington. They have a dedicated stand at the airport and will also do personalised tours upon request. Wellington has New Zealand's best public transport system which is comprised of buses, trolley buses, trains, ferries and a cable car. Commuting on bus is rather expensive in Wellington. Here's some ways to save on bus trips: Get Single Daytripper (NZD$5) and you can hop on and off any stagecoach buses after 9am weekdays & anytime on weekends & holidays. But if you're travelling in group of 4, it's better to get a Group Daytripper (NZD$10). Try the City Circular (bright yellow bus) which takes you to Wellington's top inner-city spots. It runs every 15 minutes from 10am - 4:45pm daily. You can use your Daytripper! More information in the next tip. Travelling beyond the city (to Hutt Valley, Newlands...), there're Discovery Pass (NZD$10), Star Pass (NZD$9), Capital Explorer (NZD$15 - including Tranz Metro train rides).
