Travel Light but Clean

by tissie

Make sure you have room in your luggage for all the things you'll buy on your trip - even if you think you won't buy anything!! Good walking shoes/boots are essential and you must make sure they are spotlessly clean - you have to declare them on arrival, have them inspected, and if they're dirty you have to pay to have them steam cleaned. This prevents nasty bugs entering NZ - in the mud on your boots! You will also need wet weather gear.Gnerally clothes are cheaper in NZ than in UK so I usually take the minimum and then go on a shopping trip or two (remember to take a bigger suitcase!). The dress code in NZ is much more relaxed than here too. Everything you would expect is easily available but medicines are generally more expensive than in UK, as are familiar brands of make up and toiletries. Great opportunity to try Australian ranges though which come in exciting colours and are a...

Don't forget...

by didgeridorien

Bring a big and a small backpack. The small one is for day trips and tours that last a couple of days. The big one is to put all your mess in, it's easier to carry around than a big suitcase. Be prepared for every kind of weather in New Zealand. Defenitly bring rain wear, very sturdy shoes for the long walks you can do here and warm clothing in case you'll climb a glacier or go skiing. Buy it in New Zealand, compared to the Euro everything is cheap in New Zealand dollar. Buy something that works against sandflies, believe me, you'll need it. You can buy it here, make sure to buy enough, you'll make many pictures with this beautiful scenery. You can also buy this here and sell it again when you leave. Buy a body-or a surfboard, the surf can be brilliant.

Don't fotget your hiking shoes!

by Joenes

In New Zealand there are thousands of fantastic hikes that lead you through and to the miracles of nature. So a good pair of hiking shoes is very usefull! A camera and a ***load of filmrolls are a good thing to bring with you....:-)Around every corner you will find another "Kodak" moment.

Be prepared for unpredictable weather

luggage depends on what kind of travelling you are doing. If you're travelling around with a rental car - bring as much as you'd like. If you're travelling by bus, train, hitchhiking - bring just one small suitcase or large pack. Because of NZ's geology - the weather is quite unprectible! In the winter it get's cold so make sure you have plenty of warm clothes. On the North Island November thru March is pretty hot and humid. I think the South Island is just always cold thoguh! Bring a rain jacket or umbrella - it rains a lot! And sunglasses - because it is sunny a lot...weird You will be able to find just about anything you need there You will probably want to take tons of pictures so bring lots of film, memory cards, etc. Recommend bringing a sleeping bag, swimsuit, headlamp, hiking boots or running hoes Lonely Planet New Zealand was helpful

Summertime

by rite_of_spring

Backpack/ trolleybag plus a daypack. The lighter the better T-shirts, pants (1 long and 1 short), raincoat, windbreaker, cap, SUNGLASSES shampoo, soap/body shampoo, moisturiser, SUNBLOCK, facial cleanser, LIP GLOSS, INSECT REPELLENT, basic first aid kit. You don't have to bring them as you can get them in NZ and the qualities are good. I only bring my small digital camera+CF card+battery chargers. That's all. tramping shoes, SLEEPING BAG (essential for backpackers), swimming costume, fleece, surf/snow board .....etc. depends on what kind of sports you play.

What to Bring?

by kiwigal_1

The kind of bag you bring with you on your trip to New Zealand will depend entirely on what kind of travel you are hoping to do. New Zealand is fine for suitcases if you are planning on being transferred airport to hotel and not moving around too much. I think the majority of people who will be reading this though are probably planning an adventure style trip to NZ. If this is the case then I highly recommend bringing a backpack with you. In Summer Kiwi's get around in shorts and t-shirts and jandals (otherwise known as 'flip flops'). Don't forget a good pair of sunnys (sunglasses). I think it would be better if you bought your sunscreen in NZ as it is manufactured to deal with the harsh NZ sun. Even in Summer you will need a pair of pants and a jumper/sweatshirt in the evenings (especially camping). Everything you will need can be bought here. There are plenty of great opportunities...

Pack carefully and Light

by travelteacher

As it turns out, the local flights in NZ limit the weight of your luggage. Origin Pacific limits your checked baggage weight to 20 Kg total, and carry-ons cannot weigh more than 5 Kg. Bring an umbrella! There are no toilet seat covers in public toilets.

Warm clothing!!!

by K.Knight

Even though we had some magnificent weather with beautiful blue cloudless skies, it can get very cold when you are in the shadows of the higher peaks of the south Island, especially around the Milford Sound area.

Always travel with your main bag and a day pack. I keep my toiletries and a change of clothes in the day pack which I keep with me at all times along with my camera bag. Take a warm Jacket with you, even in summer. Take the basics as they are all readily available everywhere in New Zealand I always travel with my Minolta SLR camera with 2 lenses (1x 35/80 and 1x 75/300 zoom), a two times converter, a polariser for both lenses, a spare battery and 10 spare rolls of 400 asa film with 1 loaded in the camera.
